2001 Excursion

I have the chance to buy a 2001 Excursion with 64,000 miles and in excellent condition. It has the V-10 in it. That is all that I know about the rig so far. Due to an auto accident and numerous surgeries, I have trouble driving a stick shift. Which I currently have in the way of a 2000 Dodge Ram with a Cummins in it. I miss my old Fords that I have had. I need the power to pull my travel trailer. It weighs in at over 10,000 pounds when loaded.

I do not know what to look for in this vehicle. The previous owners have said that if they stayed off the pedal they could average 14 MPG on the highway. Could this be true with a rig this size? Will putting a chip in it help with fuel mileage and power? What issues will I need to look for?

I don't need a rig this size. But I have always loved them. I don't like anybody elses driving at all. And when we go places, I like to drive. Plus, I am hoping for some grand children here soon and I want protection for them. We go places like Yellowstone and Glacier Park. Over to Washington and Idaho to visit family. And I like setting above others.

The price is $9,995.00. Oh and by the way. My wife said that I can buy it. Now I need to sell my Dodge.

Here wo go again... be prepared for the "diesel will do it better" debate.

But in the meantime, the price sounds pretty good for the low mileage.

You sound like you found a nice one, your find sounds a lot like mine. I have 67K and I have attained 15.4 with my SCT Livewire Eco Tune. Although I'm not light on the foot regularly, I did a 250 mile day trip and that was the best I've gotten in the 15 months i have had it, my average is less that 10.

I only tow a 4K boat on weekends and it doesn't even know it's back there.

I love the size too, and the piece of mind, for safety for my family, that's what it's all about.

Check out my garage for more details.

A V-10 is a good engine! One thing I will say though is that towing 10,000

pounds worth of travel trailer will never, ever, ever, ever, ever get you 14

mpg!
If a Diesel gets 14mpg towing those kinds of weights they are doing

great! I have a Diesel and get like 7-12 mpgs towing my 11K trailer! Depends

on the terrain. Just trying to shoot straight with you, please don't be fooled, go

into your purchase with lower expectations mpg wise if your towing a 10K

travel trailer or you will be greatly disappointed! A friend of mine has my

exact hauler and Excursion with a V-10 and we camp together a lot of the

time. He usually gets 5-6 mpg towing from Phoenix to Flagstaff, while I get

9-10 towing to Flagstaff. There are 2 6% grades to pull on that trip. I am

sure the V-10 guys will chime in on real world mpgs towing heavy with a

V-10.

Make sure you get the engine you want. I am not into the diesel gas debate. IF you do the research and then make your engine selection you will be happy. The gassers get less milage, but the diesel costs more at the pump. I'll let you do the math. I am very happy with my Ex. I did the research and made the engine choice that best fit me.

You might want to check out what gears it has. The V10 came with either the 3.73:1 gears or the 4.30:1 gears which are much better for towing that kind of weight.

I pull that much weight but not with a travel trailer that has a large frontal area. I'm getting 7.5 to 8.0 mpg while towing 10k lbs. I have the V10 with the 4.30:1 gears. I would expect it to be a bit lower with a more wind resistant trailer.

True, True! I have towed 10K loads on a smaller trailer and my 6.0 doesn't even work hard, but man towing my toy hauler at that same weight really works the Ex a heck of a lot more with that wind resistance!

My 03 is a V10 and has the 3.73 gears - tows my boat like a champ. Boat weighs approx 10000lbs as well depending on how much fuel and water I keep on it. It can hold 100 gallons of fuel, 26 gallons of water and 20 gallons of waste - so could be almost another 1000 pounds if fully 'wet'. If I had any hills or grades near me I would want the 4.30 gears but I've never had any problems maintaining speed or accelerating.

For mileage - I get 11 around town and I've gotten 14.5 on the highway if I keep it under 75. When towing I seem to get about 7 - 7.5 - but that is about what I've come to expect when towing with a gasser. My 3 Expeditions got the same mileage with various loads - 99 towing a 5000lb camper, 03 towing a 7000lb camper and the 07 actually towed the Sea Ray for a few times. Get the rig - you'll love it. I plan on keeping mine for a long time!

That's a good price and a nice truck that you have described.

I can't comment on the gas vs diesel debate, but I do see many more people on this forum with diesels with that kind of heavy weight being towed behind then I do gas and most will tell you that it does a better job, not that the V10 can't do it, but what does it better.

I can tell you that the PSD is much more quiet then the cummings.

and there is something to that posting above in this thread. Not only are you going to be towing 10k, but also 10k that is a vertical wall behind your truck and that will make a difference from a boat or a heavy low-boy type trailer that is not an air-brake behind your truck.

I have a 7.3 PSD 4x4 and love it. It is my only diesel that I have ever owned and bought it new from the dealer. With 75k miles on it, I seem to be only about 1/4 of the way through its life and I couldn't be happier with that figure.

I think it is a little more to own the diesel, oil changes, fuel expense, etc, but you already own one, so you know that.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

He is right about the 6.0 being a lot quieter. It has to do with the way the injectors are programed, I think. I had an 01 with the v8 and towed a small boat with no problem. I now have the 6.0 and have never towed anything with it. (go figure)

IMO, you can't go wrong with either. The diesel wili cost you more up front but gets better MPG. About 50% better than the V10. And here in FL diesle is only about 5% more than regular. It's all about what you want and what you want to spend.

Go for it. :-)

The frontal area of a load certainly will have an impact on cruising speed and mileage but would only have minimal affect when accelerating. I've never towed a travel trailer with the Ex only the Expy's I've had so I'll let someone else weigh in on their results.

oh, I totally agree

I am in FL so there are no hills to worry about towing, but if you are in a hilly area you probably want to have the most amount of power on tap so that you are not a hazard on the hwy.

I have a 20ft enclosed race trailer that either has a MINI Cooper S in it or an 88 Mustang LX so either way I am not at 11k lbs, so I don't have any idea what it feels like to tow that much, but I do know what it was like towing my trailer into a strong headwind and that was no fun, so I was glad I had the diesel and a chip when I was driving at hwy speeds.

If you had your choice of 2001 Ex same miles, same equipment if the money was similar and you were going to be towing heavy, then i would guess most would go with the PSD.

Sorry I have not been back on. I ended up with the H1N1 (Swine/Polosi) flu. At least that is what the Doc has said. Have been down for a full week now and not getting much better. It really sucks because hunting season has started and I only have been out once.

With all this crud that came on I have not gone in to see the rig yet. I trust the guy who has it for sale. Have known him for almost 23 years now and he has worked for Ford since he was 15. Now he is out on his own. Another dealer has on 02 with the PSD in it for the same price. Don't know anything else about it yet. Hopefully this weekend I may be able to get out to look a them. I really do like the big rigs. I have owned a 96 F350 Crew Cab with a 460, 97 Ford F250 extended cab PSD and a 99 F250 Super Crew PSD.

Thanks for your responsives.
