Extended Warranty

I ordered a 2010 super duty diesel
I am interested in what people here think about the extended Ford warranty
Cost?
When to buy it?
Can you dicker on the price?
Is it worth it?
What does it cover?
What doesnt it cover?
Thanks for any help....

there are 4 levels, from engine only to full coverage. not quite bumper to bumper..
https://www.fordesp.com/v2/

there is a user here that can work some good deals on these.. Ed the parts Guy..
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ml#post8003333

they typically start the clock when you pick up your vehicle new..
5 yrs, 60,000 or 100,000 miles. ..

for the original owner, I think you can buyy before the 3/36000 expires.
Ed will be able to tell you more.

the more you cover the more it costs.. if you let it slip and the 3 yr/36000 mile period expires.. then you have trouble getting extended..

they will cost more later than they do now.. and for diesel engine coverage 2k cost of warranty is noise compared to the repair costs.. I bought used, and will probably buy the engine coverage after my extended warranty expires.

Cost? varies widely
When to buy it? sometimes you can negotiate with the selling dealer to include the warranty at their cost, as a condition of sale of the vehicle. Otherwise, I would not buy it from the selling dealer and would shop it online.
Can you dicker on the price? Absolutely. Prices are set by each dealer.
Is it worth it? Personal decision. I have one on one truck, not on the other.
What does it cover? Check the website below for the plans available
What doesnt it cover?
Thanks for any help.... My pleasure. Let us know what you find.

I'd buy after a couple of years. if you truck has been bullet proof under the 3/36, and there are no signs of pending probles, skip it.

I can only answer one question, which makes all the others moot.

"Is it worth it?" No.

Extended warranty is a "for profit" item, just like a slot machine. In the long run you will be better off financially if you never put money in either one. I know, I know, everyone knows someone whose butt was saved by it or won big on the slots, but these are rare cases and not the norm. I've never bought an extended warranty and never will. I'm way ahead of the game and still would be if the engine crapped out in my '08 tomorrow. I can't say the same about the slot machines though

Keep your money for now. Don't pay for repairs you MIGHT need. If you have a major problem down the road and can't afford to fix it, borrow the money then and only then start making payments on it.

I've never understood the extended warranty racket and probably never will

If you drive a vehicle for a couple of years, you have a pretty good idea if its going to be trouble.

for example, my Wrangler was/is a relative lemon. Wish I would have got a longer extended for it. but even then, most of the big problems were taken care of in the first 36k

I bought from Troy. He was great to deal with and answered all my questions via email about the various types of coverages available for my new-to-me 2006 F250 PSD which happen to still be under the factory warranty when I bought.

Talk to Troy, I think you have time to feel your truck out a bit so you feel better about what type of coverage you want.

I'm an analyst, so I can't deny that extended warranties are generally money maker. However, in two vehicles I've owned, I've bought an extended warranty. In one case, it was close to a wash in benefit versus cost. In the other case, a current vehicle, it has paid for itself and then some... *and* have 3 yr/30K miles left. If I had put money away, or taken a loan to cover some the repairs....I would still be exposed. My take is that peace of mind is a valuable part of the equation...and if an extended warranty gives me some of that...then it should be considered part of the benefit...along with any real repair benefits.

What you are describing could apply to any insurance policy, especially health or life insurance for a healthy young adult. That's what an extended warranty is - an insurance policy.

So I would think there are many common factors shared in the decision on whether to buy certain insurance policies or extended warranties.

Agreed there are many similarities, but one big difference. With insurance we can't really guage how much liability we may have. With a vehicle we have a pretty good idea of where we would max out, the price of an engine replacement.

I.B. Washincars is right.

Insurance was once described to me as necessary if you cannot handle the financial catastrophe of the potential loss. If the loss is not severe enough to be easily overcome should it happen, buying the insurance is a waste of money.

For those of us who do most of our own work on our vehicles, an extended warranty is almost guaranteed to be a waste of money. If you either lack the desire or the ability to repair problems as they arise, the extended warranty might be worthwhile. It's not likely, though.

Like any insurance policy, they always sell the warranty at a higher price than the expected claims are projected to be. Unless you are very unlucky you aren't likely to recoup the original cost of the warranty.

I leave it up to the others to tell you whether or not to buy a warranty. I won't weigh in on that one.

What I did when I bought my '02 F150 was talk to the dealer and see how they handle warranty claims. For example, when I was just about out of the warranty, they went through my truck and fixed everything that was "out of spec". I paid the $50 deductible, their techs had work, the dealership got paid. They did around $1000 worth of work for me that day. If you can get that type of deal, it's well worth it.

Many years ago, my wife bought one of those extended warrantees fomr the used car lot that she was buying a 3 year old Mustang from. It didn't cost much and if she didn't use it within the allotted time (2 yrs) she could get a full refund. If I remember right, the warrantee was like $300 extra. Anyway, even though the car had low miles and had seen an easy life, you never know. Within 3 months of buying it, a rear wheel bearing took a dump, wiping out the axle and brakes on one side. The warrantee covered it. Then a year later, the fuel pump went south, and again, the warrantee covered it. The total bills for those two would have been over $1000, so in that case it was worth it. BUt when I bought a new GMC truck in '93, I turned down the $1200 extended warrantee and stuck with the 3/36 warrantee with the truck and am glad I did. Is there a point? I guess what I'm trying to say is that if the warrantee is cheap enough, go for it, but I wouldn't spent too much on one, because the chances of you using it are slim, but you never know.
