i got a 93 f150 4.9l 5spd 127,000miles. 4x4 and since i bought the truck in may of 2008, i have been having problems with my motor and transmission mount. i do beat on the truck once in a while. i have the motor mounts that go straight up and down on the brackets, not like the slanted ones on the older trucks. in august i went up to the pipeline(mudding spot) in north central wisconsin and it is mostly sand. so to prepare i put a solid rubber motor mount on the drivers side and a regular one on the passenger sided. now i think the drivers side is bad cause it moves about 1in when i jack up engine. ive went through maybe 3 sets what would cause these to keep going like they are?
well here is a description on how i drive. i will take it easy usually but every so often i will just floor it from a stop going through the gears somewhat quick. i only beat the hell out of it when i go mudding on the pipeline which i went in august and maybe going this weekend. well when i went up mudding it made me mad cause truck wouldn't go into gear when i wanted it to and i figured maybe my trans. mount is bad also. this is like my 4th trans mount. i didnt replace it yet. and when i got back from mudding, every time i back out of my driveway and when i hit that dip my fan hits my fan shroud. what i think might be an issue is that when i change the mounts i would change the motor mounts but not the trans mount even though it is bad.
now the torsion chain what do i do?
The motor mounts should be able to hold up to a good amount of abuse. They wear out in time, but it takes a serious hit to brake a new one. Maybe your getting low quality or defective replacements. Are you getting motor mounts or just vibration isolators from the local home depot?
Both of my 4x4 300s have had bad motor mounts. The 2wd seemed fine.
While towing a decent size load (6-8K), especially accelerating uphill, the shifter moves about 1 1/2" to the right, 4x4 shifter moves maybe 1/2".
It's kinda fun to hang onto the shifter after upshifting feeling it move away as you release the clutch and press the accelerator to the floor.
I love the torque
Yes those type motor mounts are a problem an thats why the later year model 4.9L have the older style mounts. You would actually need the bracket mounts off a newer or even older frame to accept the better motor mounts. But 300 6 cylinders put out alot off torque so as like anything it will still brake no matter what you have. My lil brother has those style on his truck (92) an my 95 I havent had to change but about once compared to his 4 or 5 times.
yeah ive posted this on the f150forum.com. they said the same thing that it was just a bad design. like i said i put a solid rubber one on drivers side and it moves 1in when i lift engine up. if i go to a junk yard would the brackets go on when the existing ones are on my truck. i was thinking about how the olderones are slanted. cause if you think about it, if its slanted it will take more stress cause it spreads it out along the whole area and my style just on the top bolt it rips off. i notice my shifter move and when my passenger side was broken it was bad cause when i gave it gas going in reverse, the shifter would almost hit my knee
if i go to a junk yard would the brackets go on where the existing ones are on my truck?
I have been going through motor mounts too. I haul anywhere up to 8,000 lbs and the torque lifts the left front tire at times. The mounts usually explode under the strain with a loud boom! And the motor rolls on its side, usually tearing hoses and wires loose. I am going to get new mounts under warranty and chain both sides this week, if I get time. I have been hit in the leg too many times and don't like it when the stick jumps out of reach either.
i have a 1992 Ford f150 truck and my transmission isnt good and I have a 1990 Ford f150 truck transmission and wondering if it will interchange with each other
Probably. Not all F150's had the same engine and transmissions though so we can't say for sure. Some are four wheel drive and some two wheel drive, manual transmissions, automatic transmissions, all kinds of variables.
Back on the actual topic of this thread, I had a 1987 4.9 five speed that broke six passenger side motor mounts. Usually backing uphill out of the driveway. All were made in India from a chain parts store and guaranteed. The parts store got tired of me complaining and bringing mounts back for free replacements and finally just gave my money back. Ordered mount number seven from the Ford parts counter and that one lasted the three years until I sold the truck.
I have been changing the motor mounts in my son's 1989 ford f150 4x4 manual just about wvery other month. He doesn't beat or bang rarely if ever puts it in the mud. I believe the new motor mounts are ****
