Friday I changed my oil and put a bottle of stp fuel injector cleaner in the tank, a couple of hours later my truck really started running like sh%t. The guys up at ford were saying to run the truck for a while and see if it clears up. I drove 250 miles this weekend(all highway) and ran horrible, I got back last night and my check engine light came on. A parts store checked the code and said cylinder 8 was miss firing, and that side of the fuel rail was "lean". Im trying to figure out where to start on this thing. Any suggestions?
Also, instead of using STP fuel cleaner, I'd use either Seafoam or Berryman's B12.
I worked on my girl's '01 Explorer Sport 4.0 V6 two weeks ago and it made all the difference. It would barely start at times, much less maintain idle at a traffic light, and got bad fuel economy. After running some seafoam through the brake booster, the crankcase (changing the oil after), cleaning the IAC with B12, and running a high concentration of Seafoam in the gas tank, and changing the plugs, she had a brand new truck again.
So if I were you I'd check the plugs, see what they have to tell you, and check your fuel filter as well.
I checked it and seems fine? the fuel injector is reading 15 ohms, so i assume thats good also. IM not sure how im gonna be able to check the coil, being alone right now? or can you test it any other way than seeing if theres spark?
2. You can use Seafoam for this. Remember that your tank is large, so you might what to put in two bottle too work. The bottle will say it works up to 25 gallon per can. That will work if you fill half your tank. Also remember to put in the seafoam first then fill up tank. This way you get a good mix. Run the truck all the way to empty and refill with good gas.
Check your Mas Air flow Sensor. This will get dirty once in awhile if you use a oil air filter. Some of the oil will get on the sensor and will mess up the fuel ratio. They do sell a cleaner for this $6.99 a can (Mass Air cleaner).
I bring this up because my wife's van did the same thing and once I did all this, everything work fine. She also passed her safety emission test. A week later I went and got the fuel injection cleaned out. I just wanted to make sure everything was clean out. You can see the junk coming out from the tail pipe. This also happen when you use cheap gas. Sometimes we forget the simple things.
If you get a mis-fire for Cylinder 8 then it's either the plug or COP. You can always move the COP to another cylinder, run a scan and see if the mis-fire follows. If so than you know it's the COP. Otherwise it's the plug.
As far as the lean code can you post the exact code? Many times the vacuum line from the throttle body to the PCV will break at the elbow. That can cause a lean code to show. Without the exact code it's hard to tell what is wrong.
I use BG 44K, man that stuff is awesome. within minutes of driving you can feel a difference in how much better the truck runs! and best of all my cousin hooks me up for free.
