Has anyone tried turning the head 180* and see if it solves the problem? I haven't remounted mine, but don't remember a problem adjusting either one when driving it home. Would definitely noticed in 2K mile trip and in a panel truck.
the head and socket are symmetrical unfortunately.. so direct rotation doesn't help.
I think if you search this topic you might find the mirrors we all use are not stock to the 53-56. They were made for a later model, maybe 61-66. I think the stock ones had a square head. Hope some one lets us know for sure.

I think you are correct.. mine are listed as 53-66.. but probably later than 56 originally
I tossed the box that had the part number on it.. (I think)
I have no problems looking out my passenger side mirror:
I still believe the chrome round mirrors did not come out until 1957 or even later. I have never seen the round mirrors in any dealer catalog, accessory list and never saw a 53-56 truck in a junk yard with these round chrome mirrors on...
