Has anyone replaced the rubber boot on their 1999 Ranger, 2wd, 3.0L Flexfuel, 4R44E automatic trans, 141,000miles,
The rubber boot on the lower end of the intermidiate shaft needs to be replaced on my truck, it's split circumfertially on one side. It seems that there's one pinch bolt at the bottom at the steering gear and one at the top in the cab that have to be taken off so that the column can be collapsed to take out. Then the new boot is fitted over the small end.
I can't find the boot on my usual suppliers website. Anybody have a source or information on the removal?
I saw the same thing on the SPIKE TV show "Trucks" where they are putting a 4.6L into a Ranger, the steering column had the rubber boot split where the u-joint coupling is.
I ended up using a replacement rack and pinion steering boot. Seems to be working.
I have a '99 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L 2WD. My steering gear lower shaft boot is also cracked and split exposing the knuckle. I don't believe you can purchase the boot separately as when I went to check with the Ford Dealer Parts, they showed me that the boot is an integral part of the steering gear lower part assembly and must be replaced as a whole. Unless someone else know where to buy the boot separately. The assembly cost a little over three hundred dollars. The boot just protects the knuckle joint from street dirt. Other than that there seemed to be nothing wrong with the shaft. It becomes bad enough I'll simply remove the damaged boot and just keep an eye on the knuckle joint to make sure it's clean and lubricated.
Just got done doing my 99 Eddie Bauer Explorer ...That boot , like said above is unobtainium..unless buying whole assy....I purchased some shock boots and modified it. Reattached it with clamps..looks pretty good and works great to keep dirt off u-joint Cleaned and greased u-joint while steering shaft was removed..
The boot can be ordered at rock auto.com Go to steering section. MOOG rack and pinion bellows kit. There's about 4 different brands available. Only costs about $12
