Hello all, I'm looking at purchasing either an 07 or 08 King Ranch supercrew and was wondering if you could give any input. I currently own an 03 Tundra with 197k miles which has been a great truck but it's time to upgrade. I'm not loyal to any one brand as I have owned a Jeep, Ram, Maxima and now my Tundra. Reliability is probably most important to me as I drive alot and the F150 gets especially good marks for those model years.
Basically I'm looking for honest opinions on any problems, issues etc as well as what you like about your trucks. I know it's my decision, do my own homework, blah blah. But you wouldn't have a forum if everyone did that. Thanks for any info.
Well if you’re going with an 07-08 there isn’t much to say, they were pretty solid by that point. Being that I don’t believe the king ranches came with anything other then the 5.4 try and get one with an engine manufactured after 10/09/2007, I think that was the date they changed to a new head design with a different sparkplug, which will avoid a known flaw when it comes time to change them. The king ranch seats require a lot of care, they need to be conditioned regularly and they stain easily. If I could go back and do it again, I’d get the 6.5 foot bed and power fold mirrors, little wide for the local ATM.
The original plug was a two piece design and prone to carbon build which could cause them to snap off in the heads when you try to remove them. A number of methods have been developed to reduce the likelihood of this as well as some special tools to extract a broken plug should it occur, but ultimately it could potentially turn into a very costly job. There is a significant amount of information in this forum on the problem and you should do a search if you want to know more. Don’t let this scare you though, it’s a problem and you should be aware of it, but many don’t have any issue at all and through preventative measures early on it can be avoided.
As for the date of manufacture, there should be a sticker on the engine. There will also be a sticker on the drivers door that will tell you when the truck was manufactured, however this is not the date of when the engine was manufactured, which would have been at an earlier time, but if you find a truck manufactured a month or so after this date you would likely have the new design.
I had an 05 Tundra SR5 4X4 and loved it! I now have an 06 F150 XLT 5.4 Supercab 4X4 and I love it also! 2 different trucks though! I must say the Tundra had a nicer interior rode smoother seemed more like a car! The F150 is a Truck! Rides a little rougher and doesn't get up and go like the tundra but I like it just as much! The King Ranch has a nicer interior than my XLT so that point might not mean anything on the tundra had a nicer interior! Anyway I don't regret my purchase on my Used F150!
Thanks again for the info, will definately keep those things in mind. Yeah, the Tundra has been a great truck, no problems for all those miles and rides great. Actually looked at the new ones, great powertrain but bounces incredibly on concrete roads, like nothing i've ever experienced in a truck! The F150 is a great all around truck. It will mainly be a grocery getter during the week but will tow and hunt on the weekends. Thanks again for all the input
