Shop manuals

I'm looking around for the shop manuals for my 79 F150. I have gathered from other posts in the forums that if I want to have all the information I need 5 volumes.

From what I have seen, there are 3 very common volumes, and this is what I frequently see listed on ebay. Are the other ones rarely used?

Also, I see tons of CD's being offered with the 3 volumes. Has anyone purchased those before? What is their source typically? Low quality scans by some Joe with a set of manuals? Would I be better off just buying the books as I find them?

Does anyone know if there are any reprints of these being done (is it possible to buy new ones), or if only old used books are being traded around?

I just bought mine on ebay.

1977 Ford Truck Repair Shop Manual CD Pickup Bronco Van:eBay Motors (item 400080373112 end time Nov-19-09 16:22:44 PST)

That's mine, but the cd is great, they are PDF manuals so you can enlarge them.
Very clean pictures.

LOADS of information in these manuals, they don't make em like they used to.

FYI, you can have these printed at kinkos, I was quoted ~$150 to have them printed from the cd.

I'd hold out for the complete 5 volume set, they're on ebay all the time, i paid 20 bucks each for a complete '73, '75 and '77 set, you shouldn't have any problems picking up a complete set of '79 manuals for cheap, don't pay the inflated 80-100 bucks some ebayers are asking, be patient and you'll score a cheap set.

How easy is it to search and find what you need with the manuals on a cd? I havent made up my mind if I want paperback or cd. I kinda like the idea of being able to print out what I want and it doesnt matter if it gets oily. But I also like the idea of having the actual original Ford paperback manuals.

I was impatient after buying my first bigger truck ('79 F600) and blew $100 for the 6th volume of the 5 volume set. It's the Medium/Heavy Duty Shop Manual and has all the body/chassis/electrical for the F-B-C-L600 thru 9000series (exceptCL9000) It has no engine info, but that's in the Engine volume of the original set. Has the same cover design (white w/ red and appears to fit perfectly with the rest), so now I have a 6 volume set. Had'nt seen this volume before and was afraid I'd miss it. So now somebody can tell how they found one, in mint condition, and the guy paid 'em to hall it away, right?

I have a junk laptop that I use in the garage, but printing is easy enough to do from a pdf file.
You can also enlarge and print from any size.

Get the CD, you will be glad you did, just toss them out if they get dirty. Very easy to read, nice and clear, and ALL of the pages are there, there is no guarantee with the old paper shop manuals. Don't fall for the still in the plastic shrinp wrap trap, shrink wrap is not hard to come by!

Then, down the road if you still feel the need to have the original manuals for your truck, shop for them at your leisure, and price range!

My thought was to get a paperback, scan the pages I was going to use, then I have both the original paper and an electronic copy that I can print and reprint.
Thats a good question though... if the CD's are just scans of the manual, then you would not be able to search them in adobe

These manual prices are crazy. I luckily inherited a few good books, awesome mechanical diagrams. If I had some better wiring diagrams, I'd be set. I'm thinking about throwing down a few bucks for a Haynes just for the wiring diagrams. These trucks aren't that complex. I've had my F100's for about 7 month and I nearly have the complete design committed to memory.

Does anyone have any idea why only 3 volumes are typically offered for 79 trucks on ebay, but other years have 5 volumes?

BTW, if anyone is shopping, Amazon has some of the paper versions for sale for between $6-$15 each. Not too bad of a deal if you are going that route (much better than ebay).

Best thing my shop's owner did was move us to electronic repair guides. You can get the info faster, and print out what you need. ( we still have all our paper books just in case)

I do the same thing at home, I have a second PC in the garage, and can look up/print anything I need.

I also bought the 5 manual set on CD for my 74 from a company on Ebay, best 28.00 I've ever spent.
