Another bone of contention/topic of spirited discussion between myself and buddies.....mounting engines on the frame. In this case a 460ci in an F100 non swiss cheese frame or an F150. Non factory crossmember and front suspension that is well up to the job. Why? Why not? Done it before on numerous cars for many reasons without problems but never with anything this big and heavy. We like to talk about things and throw ideas about.
So you are making your own crossmember? I've seen a few done on trucks that were swapped to solid axles. The fabbed crossmembers I've seen were much cleaner and increased axle to crossmember clearance. The crossmember on '80-'96 is a terrible design, it hangs low and in general gets in the way of everything, but that is because it was designed to attach the pivot points of the IFS axle to.
The factory frame perches are perfectly capable of holding a 460, be it factory 460 mounts or small block mounts. The 300 six mounts would be up to the task too, but they aren't even close to being in the right spot for a 460 so they must be replaced.
Why do you ask? Your crossmember hit the ground on the lowmobile? Nobody told you truck go up, not down? Just messin' with ya... Seriously, what are you trying to do?
I have sold the 302 that I was going to fit and am looking at other options. The 460 query isnt strictly mine, I am looking at other (non ford) options. A friend of mine has bought a solid but ugly '84 F150 I6 and is contemplating a few things.
Are you talking about mounting plates(elephant ears)to mount the engine to the frame directly?I believe summit racing sells them, they even make them to mount the mighty 460 into a foxbody mustang.
When my Jag front went in, the chassis/crossmember was boxed up to replace the old engine mounts, with a few speed holes added. This is the best pic A can find.
