Why is the speedometer not working?
1. Tranny overhaul. The E40D was completely rebuilt to "bulletproof" standards.
2. Axle swap. I had the axle from a 1991 E250 with 3.73 gearing put in the van and took out the original axle (3.54).
BUT now the speedometer drops down 5 or 10 mph every 10 seconds or so, i.e. at 60 mph it'll bounce to 50 then bounce back to 60 for a few seconds then drop again. Mechanic said he put new speed sensor in the axle...
any ideas?
What do ya think?

Found this elsewhere on the web...does this ring true to anyone for a 1993 van?
"The speedometer is also used to provide speed signal for correct operation of the vehicle's EEC module and speed control (if so equipped). Because of this, it is VERY IMPORTANT to change the speedometer's internal conversion constant if the size of tires on the vehicle is changed.
Changing the conversion constant to the proper value when the tires are changed will also make sure that the speedometer retains the original factory-set accuracy."
If so, how do you change the "conversion constant" ?
