E350 7.5L intake question

Hello all. Does anyone know why the intake tubes feeding the airbox are sooooo tiny? The hoses which come from the airbox to the TB are huge as one would expect them to be but then you see the intake side of the airbox and there are two small trumpet tubes. Any reason these shouldn't be removed in exchange for something with more substantial?

Thanks

I took those air horns off on my E350 7.5L once, did not notice any power diffrence and MPG stayed the same the same. The ONLY THING I did notice, was the engine air intake was alot more louder than with them on. Was moaning at highway speeds, I put that thing back on and that moan went away. That part is called a "Helmitz(sp?) resonator" to keep noise of the flowing air muffled.
