removing bed on a '86

how hard is it to remove the bed on a 1986 f150 supercab with 6 ft bed? how many bolts are there? also anything else to remove? i was going to put a pully system in the garage to hoist it. anyone know about how much it weights?

You can look inside the bed and count the bolts. I am not sure how many since I have never had a shortbed.

You will have to take the small bolts loose on the tank filler and take the fill hose apparatus loose from the bed, and also unplug the light wiring in the rear, or take the lenses out and fish the whole light socket assemblies through the holes in the corner of the bed.

The trusses in my garage held my bed easily. It's more awkward than heavy. Don't be surprised if you end up grinding the heads of the bed bolts off to get the bed off if you have a lot of rust.

Grinding the bolt heads off is how I did mine. If they're rusted they will just spin and damage the bed when you apply a lot of torque to them. I used the engine crane/ratchet straps to lift the bed off the frame. Going back on, I rounded up 3 friends and walked it over.

if you have any old school camper jacks that are of the free standing kind.. they fit right in the wheel wells and it is a piece of cake to lift the bed and drive out from under it..

I just had the bed (longbed) off my 250 and it's really not to bad. If the carriage bolts do spin all you need to do is grind a slot in them with a cutting tool and have someone in the bed hold the bolt with a huge screwdriver or even the pressure of holding a peice of wood will sometimes be enough. good luck.

Just swapped 8ft beds on my f250, ground the heads off the carriage bolts on both trucks and punched them through. There are 4 bolts for each fuel filler and one hose clamp each underneath, one plug for wiring on the drivers side frame rail.

I got both beds off, moved around, on sawhorses, then back on the truck myself. Got my gf to help me bolt it back down. I was really surprised at how light they are, two healthy guys can lift it and move it around easy.

6ft bed should have 6 bolts.
