I was shopping around for some plug wires for my 2000 Expedition with the 5.4 and was trying to find some high performance wires for a decent price. The only ones I could find were $125 or more. Is this a normal price and what do you guys recommend for the wires. Also is it not even worth it and should I just put factory wires on it.
i have a 4.6 and it also has the coils on the plug
The 4.6 originally had coil packs and spark plug wires. In later years the design was changed to COPs on the 4.6, just like the ones on the 5.4 engine.
There is a vendor on this site that sells high output COPs. His claim is higher voltage into a wider plug gap resulting in less wasted fuel. To me it's just a bunch of snake oil, but that's just my opinion. Years ago in the pre-PCM days it was true, but with computers controlling every aspect of engines and transmissions these days, efficiency is about as good as you're going to get. I would (and did) get a set of 8 COPs of eBay for around $80 and installed those.
I have seen dyno results on coils from this compainy used on mustangs. The one that i am thinging of was on a 5.0l. I know that is not quite the same but it did make more power. I can't say as it did anything for mileage. The ingnition system on your 5.4l i much more powerful than the old 5.0l system, so i wouldn't expect any noticible difference
