Transmission Qs

Alright, truck seems to be up and running. I will post a long thread (with pics) when I have a moment. For now I am busy working two jobs while I still can. Work is hard to find around where I am in Alaska.

Getting to the point, I would like to freshen up my trans fluid before winter settles in. I lost a bit of fluid during the engine swap and I am not sure what to add since I don't know what fluid is in the trans and I don't want to mix the wrong fluids. Last time I tried to put new trans fluid in, I learned that my trans drain bolt is stripped.

I was thinking about getting a new pan and throwing new fluid in as well. I know my converter has a drain plug, so I figured I should be able to drain all of it without flushing right?

What are my options on pans and filters? The MAG pans look nice but heft at 330.00 a pop. I would rather just get a new oem pan, and maybe an external filter kit for it.

Thoughts?

Depending on how long you plan to keep the truck could determine how much you want to spend on the pan. Would one of those expanding "rubber" drain plugs work for a while to get you by?

As far as a crude flush to clear out the old tranny fluid, you could disconnect the return line from the transmission cooler, put a piece of hose on the cooler end and cap the tranny end to keep dirt out. Then, with the engine running, pour in tranny fluid at close to the same rate as it is coming out of the hose (and being caught in a pail). This would probably get you closer to 100% flushed than just draining the pan and TC. Would probably work best with 2 guys, one on the hose and one on the key. You would spend a little more for the extra fluid but you would have a better idea of what is in the transmission. Use a couple quarts more than the capacity of the tranny just to be sure you get most of the old out. Like is said, this is a crude method but worth a try.

Sure glad to hear that you are having success with the engine swap. You are going to look back on this in a few years and think ............

When was it changed last?? If it has been a few years, it's likely got plain ol' Mercon in it. If you don't want to mess with the pan for now, you could pull the cooler return line and let the pump empty the pan. Or do it the old-school way and just deal with the ATF shower when you drop the pan...

If I were you, I'd get with Ed and have him send you a new pan. Then pump it out as much as you can. At that point, you might as well do the entire flush and install a new filter. If you do the whole thing, you can put in whatever you want. I switched mine using Mark's flush method to Mobil1 Syn Merc V a couple years ago, and it's been great!

That might be the simplest way. Just get a new factory pan and then put some good fluid in it. Can I chance the inline filter near the engine?

What inline filter? Do you have one now? If not, I wouldn't add one unless you get a new trans.
