I think there are head and ignition differences too. It is the same block though. Hard to say how much may have changed.

2000 and half of 2001 used the 2.5L that is a larger version of the old Pinto 2.3L from the 1970's. Late 2001 and 2002 use the 2.3L Duratech 16 valve engine that is in no way releated to the old 2.3 and 2.5.
I have owned many of the old 2.3L 's in various cars, a 2.3L in a 95 Ranger and currently own a 99 Ranger with the 2.5L. They are bulit proof reliable. I also own a 2005 Escape with the new 2.3L Duratech and it is much snappier than then the older 2.3, but I have no complaints with my 99 2.5L.

The bore of both the 2.3 and the 2.5 are the same: 3.780"; the stroke is different: 2.3, 3.126" and 2.5, 3.401". This results in a crank with longer throws for the 2.5 than for the 2.3. Rods and pistons are also different. The 2.5 head appears to be interchangeable to the 2.3 block.
