Assuming you want to know whether or not what's on your bronco is factory or not? For the 68, it should be a 289, but your casting code "D10E..." indicates it's a 70s motor. The D is 70s, E is 80s, etc.

The tranny is most easily identified by sight. If you go the tech article section on classicbroncos.com and go any of the transmission articles they have pics of them all. Chances are if it's an auto it's a C4 or if it's a manual it's probably a RAT/RAN. RAT/RANs are factory 3spd + reverse. If it's a 4spd + reverse you might have an NP435. Again, pics are the easiest way to tell.

Front axle from the factory would be a Dana 30. Starting in 71 or 72 they went to a Dana 44. The way to tell the difference is the Dana 30 has a kingpin knuckle as opposed to ball joints.

If you post a pic of your tranny via photobucket I can tell you what it is.

Nightstick 180 Thanks for reply:: Yes i would like to - know what came "stock" on my 68'. I guess the Engine is 80's? year t Vin# says = "289" Started looking for a 67'-68' stock 289{ complete} not much luck.. Found a picture of trans. NP 435 great ! Rear Dif. has "44" cast on housing, Dumb Question, are 44's & "9'' Different all together ? if so should i start looking for a "9" THANKS Alan

It would be highly unlikely you have a D44 rear. Those never came on broncos. If someone switched it out they're retarded. Easiest way to tell the difference between a 44 and a 9" is the 9" has a third member, 44 does not. Meaning, the 9" bolts will be on the driveshaft side of the axle. If you take off the nuts and pull the axles out, you can remove the entire diff. The 44 bolts are on the opposite side of the driveshaft and if you remove them the cover comes off to reveal the diff but it doesn't come out as an assembly.

NP435 is a great bulletproof tranny. Doesn't do you any good for a street rig, but they're great for crawling.

If you're trying to go back to a stock configuration the 289 is what you need. No point in doing so if you're not though.
