why would some one put blue caulking around the oil pan bolt? had a little oil on bottom of pan. what can i do to correct the problem? had oil changed 2 times while traveling this summer.
thanks
Id suspect either the threads on the plug are worn, or the actual threads on the pan itself are worn, maybe both. Its probably blue RTV which would in theory slow down or stop the leak. I had this happen on a vehicle once, they helicoiled it and luckily it held! Good Luck!
what is helicoil?
the oil is coming from around the pulg.
when they had to borrow a 36 mm socket should have been a hint for me. the oil plug is almost round.
thanks
Some or all of the threads are open to the crankcase oil. If the threads are bad/worn/stripped, then the oil flows onto the end of the bolt, between the bolt and the threads, and leaks onto your driveway. Putting a little liquid gasket will slow the leak, but not fix it.
A helicoil is a "new" set of threads for the bolt. The old threads are drilled out, new threads are cut, and the helicoil is screwed/threadlocked into place, so that there are new threads for the old bolt.
check out fumoto drain plugs. its a locking stainless steel and brss ball valve that threads in place of the factory plug. it makes the oil change easier and there is no wear on the threads.i've seen them on everything from semi's to cars and never heard of a single malfunction. lots of people saybut what if .....happens. well i've never heard of any of the what ifs actually happening. its just an all round nice cheap mod that will give you a nice feeling everytime you change oil and don't have to fight the drain plug and get hot oil down your arm.
