I have resorted to using high temp axle grease to lube the gasket and I have large Channel-Lock filter pliers. Before I started using grease it took a mighty effort even with the pliers to heft the filter off.
Chris, thanks for that picture. I'm gonna replace my two strap wrenches with one like that!

Glad you finally got it off. Peter called me in the middle of this to tell me it's just not me with stupid little problems like this thanks buddy!
OH WAIT! Peter had time to call you but not me??? When i live close and could have come to help.... I see how you are Peter.... Its because he's tall right?

Sorry it took so long. Today was a loooooooooong day for me. Just got home, snapped the pictures, and am now posting them.
The first two pictures are of the first filter strap wrench we used to try and remove the filter. The third picture is of my second filter strap wrench I used to try and remove the filter.
I got stubborn the second time and just kept at it. You can see the results.
I didn't know it was twisting like that. I thought the metal on the can was "giving".
