1994 e350 7.3l

Hi all. I'm new to Ford's and Ford Diesel's I've always been a GM guy..

I've been looking at E350 17ft U-haul truck's they have for sale as a cheep toy hauler.
I am pretty sure that it is a IDI engine. I know as a N/A engine there is only so much power to get out of them. What is the best size exhaust to get. I was thinking of 2.5in duel's, thrush glasspacks at 40in long, or even 3in duels. They sounded good on my 350ci so why not a 7.3L. As being a E-series I'm sure there is no easy way to open up the air intake for more air flow, but if there is I would like to know.

I did do a search and after 30 pages I thought I'd ask.

You could turbo it......or get one of the K&N horn inlets.......for lack of a better wording
Opening the exhaust will help......

Thank you for the reply PLC7.3,
A turbo is a great idea but not viable, it a job worth more then the truck,
and I'm going for cheap. So any one else? Does 2.5in or 3in duel exhaust sound like to much or not enough.

Thank you all

Welcome to the forum.

Dual doesn't do much for a diesel. Anything larger than a single 4" pipe is a waste unless you are running a huge turbo. Upgrading the intake (cut out the soup bowl) and installing a single 3-4" pipe will help, but I wouldn't expect to see more than about 10 Hp on a good day. I'm running a single 3" pipe and my truck is a real handful with the turbo. Use a strait flow through muffler (not one with internal baffles).

Don't be so quick to dismiss the idea of a turbo, because they can be found cheap second hand. $500 can sometimes get you a decent complete kit. The hypermax kit is under $2000 brand new but you will have to make your own exhaust.

You can do the intake and exhaust mods for now and if you really like the truck just keep an eye out for a used turbo kit and assemble all the parts as time permits. It can be done on the cheap if time isn't a factor. Bigger exhaust and turbocharger complement each other, so doing the exhaust now, will not harm anything later on if you change your mind on getting a turbo.

Other then that, there really isn't much you can do that will make a big difference other than making the engine and fuel system are in good working order.
