Recently, I had to remove the driver seat out of my '00 Limited as the upper back portion of the leather where the embroidery of "lmited" was all ripped. Surprisingly, that portion of the leather tears very easily.
Anyway, it wasn't too hard to remove the upper leather from the seat foam/frame. I then took it to a local auto upholstery to have them change out just that one section. Anyway, all looks great.
Since the driver side arm rest leather is all cracked on top, upon assembly the seat, I noticed that both the right and left arm rest leather and it's top/bottom are identical and can be swapped out. So I just swap the driver and passenger side. So now, the bottom side of the passenger leather arm rest is now the top of the driver side arm rest. Since the arm rest is usually down, you don't see the cracked leather arm rest that is now on the bottom side on the passenger side.
The leather arm rest is just held by suspenders that can be easily remove in 5 second.
The replacement for the leather arm rest cover is about $50 each. Hope this makes sense.
I am in need of doing this also, do you remove the whole armrest and just swap, or pull the cover off and swap? If have to remove the armrest, can you advise how its held on...Just picked up my X yestarday and it needs this done.....
ok, I couldnt wait so i went out and just started messing around.......For someone who doesnt know how, This is how I did it....I carefully pulled the material over the back of the rest near the pivot.....I was going to swap the whole armrest but the material was moving pretty good, so I just pulled the leather off the foam carefully then grabbed the other end and pulled a bit while pulling from the back ever so slowly.....she just slid off.....repeated on the other arm.....The just slid back on in reversepushing on arm end while pulling on the pivot end, lined it up good then pulled the shoulder over the back of the foam....whola....both armrests swapped in 5 minutes....if that......
I saw where someone had asked this a month or so ago and didn't remember seeing it answered. My drivers side one cracked where my elbow sits yesterday and I found this searching and it worked like a charm (and was free) .
These covers switch really easily.
Thought I'd bump this in case it helps someone else.

Did you only slide off and swap the covers or did un bolt the whole armrest and swap them?

See this was unclear to me too. Let me just say, don't unbolt anything. You can't flip them over that way. I tried just a little while ago. Also, don't pull the foam and cover off. Just pull the leather cover off and switch it out with the other side. I found this easiest to do from the back seat.
THIS little trick worked slicker than snot on my truck! Looks brand new, can't see the driver side cracked area because it is now UNDER the passenger armrest. Took less than 3 seconds to give the interior a brand new look!!
Here's a tip you can use. When installing these armrest or seat backs, go to the drycleaner and buy some this plastic bags they sell.
Put them over the foam on the armrests or seat covers and the suckers slide right on like butter. Tuck in any excess. You will wonder how you ever did it otherwise before.
