i have a 351c that has set a while, and has cylinder pitting the crank is a 2 bolt. the cylinders have already bored 30. i think they will clean at 50. but my question is i would like to machine block for 4 bolt (it is the one you can mod), but at 50 to 60 over would it be throwing money away to do the mod. any opinions on this.
depends on how much you can find find a better block for vs how thick your cylinder walls sonic check at etc etc. a small number of blocks will break through during a .060 bore, some will just be a little thin, then there are some that are good to live at .060 and even more. you don't know unless you check.
that said, even though the caps have places for the bolts, the main webbing in the block is less than beefy. i'd rather machine in dowels if you think you need something more than 2 bolts instead of taking the material away from the webs. but if they're the correct caps for the block all you'd need to do is drill and tap, the registers should be fine and shouldn't need a line bore if it doesn't already.
for some reason, 4 bolt caps bring in the bacon on ebay lately, and there is an aftermarket Cleveland block on the way if you can wait for it
