My buddy has a 96 Taurus sedan with a cracked block. It's a 24V 3.0 V6 just like mine so I have some experience w/this motor. He want's me to help replace it. Essentially, this means I will be doing most of the work as he does not know alot about cars. I'm a pretty good mechanic, installed all the stuff that you see in my truck's gallery. that, however, was a low tech rear whell drive vehicle. Is this something I should try? Is doing this with a front driver real hard? I'm hesitant...
If you have a hoist and a strong bench its not too bad to do. I take out the complete front assm. with engine and trans out the bottom. I lower it out using bench or engine table. Then seperate engine and trans and lift off with engine hoist. I would not try one myself without a hoist. Hope this helps.
You take out the complete front assembly?? Sounds like a bear. Are there any special tricks to doing this? Is it just a matter of unbolting everything and then bolting it back up?
If it was just a 12V you may be able to take it out the top. I do not think the duratech will come out the top. I have never tried. Every one I know drops everything out the bottom then seperates the engine and transmission. Leave the steering rack up and I seperate the struts from the steering knuckles. But like I said before I would not do it without a hoist.
A friend of mine, who had changed many taurus engines, was certain that this time he could get the engine out the top in an effort to save time. After wrestling with it for a couple hours he ended up taking it out the bottom.
Hey guys, if you are doing this at home,I hope you have a lot of patience. It is designed to come out the bottom, engine, trans, steering rack, and all.So even if you drop the cradle on the ground, the car still needs to be raised at least 5 feet. The whole assembly comes out in about an hour and a half in the shop with all the right equipment and lots of practice. This applies to taurus-sable-continental, windstar, mustang, and old cougar and t-birds.
Hope this helps, ROB.
