I am looking at buying a 99-01 PSD 7.3L van with 150K Miles to make into an RV. BUT many say it is HELL to work on the engine, tranny, anything. I work on my Cummins and know powerstrokes. But are they a nightmare to get to in vans?? I HATE paying people to work on an engine when I can do it.
I just want to know if I can even get to it (injectors, turbo, pulleys, belts, etc. I would like to add mods and replace things as they fail without pulling the engine.
Are they really impossible to work on??? Are they as bad and impossible as the foreign cars to work on?? Do you work on your own van??
I wish I could access the back of my block like you can on a van, but yeah, I'd kinda think that getting to most stuff would be a PITA. I'd just ask someone with a van in one of the forums, or on the street if you see one.
IIRC, the vans have easier access to the turbo and up-pipes cause the dog house is right there. I've heard that getting to the fuel filter and valley area sucks cause thats right where the cowl is.
Well I have both, and I can say without a doubt, I will NEVER own another Powerstroke powered van. Don't get me wrong, I love the 7.3, but it is not worth it in a van. To change the fuel filter, the air box, resonator, and intake tube have to come out. The second battery is on the frame rail, so you have to bench press it up there. Don't even ask about glow plugs, injectors, or hpop. Having said that, the up pipes and turbo are a piece of cake to do, but that is about it. By the way, I just came in from changing my fuel filter, so the timing of your post is impeccable.
