<!-- / icon and title --> <!-- message --> I am looking at buying a 99-01 PSD van to make into an RV. BUT many say it is HELL to work on the engine, tranny, anything. I work on my Cummins and know powerstrokes. But are they a nightmare to get to in vans?? I have a hard enough time working on a truck. I HATE paying people to work on an engine when I can do it. I just want to know if I can even get to it. I would like to add mods and replace things as they fail without pulling the engine.
It's tight in the bay, and the junk 6.uhoh requires the body to be separated from the frame on almost all repairs. My 5.4 has the back of the head at the beginning of the opening, leaving only the transmission bolts to be accessed through the dog house.
I'd love to have a Cumins put in my van, I'm positive it could be made to fit, and be better than the PSD in all aspects.
I would not buy a 6.0 and have avoided working on them.

Some things are not too bad on the 7.3, but, some of the "simple" things can take a way long time, like the fuel filter. On the truck it is a 15-20 minute job if you take your time, most of that getting the ladder, van is probably about 4 hours.
Go for it. You've got great access to the back of the engine where leaking up-pipes are a breeze with the van. The 99-03 PSD section of this forum is a great place to get info on it. A lot of guys upgrade their factory turbo with the van turbo since it doesn't have an exhaust backpressure valve.
