on one of the 99 crown vics, i am getting .58 amps draw with everything turned off.
does this sound like a bad diode in the alternator??
if left sit for 2 days, it will kill the battery.
Most all vehicles today have SOME current draw with everything off. Computer, radio (to maintain station selection), etc. Don't know HOW much. but a 1/2 amp is prob close to right. How old are (is) the batteries (battery).
all 6 batteries i have are less that 6 months old.
i do not test with a battery hooked up. i got the .58 amp draw with the amp meter hooked up between the pos cable and the pos terminal on a fully charged battery.
initial draw is .96 amp, then once the computer and radio are done with the surge i get the .58
that seems like a very high draw though. i was figuring on more like a .002 amp draw.

.58 amps might be a little high but I dont really know. I would disconnect the large wire on the ALT while watching the amp meter to see if it lowers the current draw. It could also be the voltage reg. so you might try disconnecting it also.
To see of it is the diode Tom feel the alt in the morning. If it is a tad warmer than the air temp chances are the diode is the culprit. This is the poor mans test.
thanks for the tip Jim. but i eliminated the alternator as the culprit today, when i unplugged it and got no change.
the trunk light switch was bad. unplugging the trunk light brought the drain down to .31 amps.
300 milliamps is a lot better, but i think i still have another light staying on. i am thinking it should be more like 50 or 100 milliamps shut off.
