I’ve noticed this week that intermittently it is hard to start my 99. Thought it was moister but yesterday was dry as a bone out. Today it started fine but on my way to work it felt like one of the cylinders was cutting out while doing 60-65 mph (after driving approximate. 15 miles). I give it a little more gas and it would clear out.
It has a 5.4 in it wit 94k on it. I have been planning on changing the plugs out for the last year but never got around to it.
Could this problem just be the plugs, a COP going bad or maybe both? It could be something else all together. I’m just not sure.
I just started to think it could be the fuel filter but that is less than a year old.
When I say it’s hard to start, the truck turns over but then quickly dies unless I give a little gas to bring up the RPMs. Kind of reminds me of my Mustang if the plugs get fouled up and have to be cleared.
Here lately this problem seems to be popping up a good bit. On another post I had suggested to check the fuel pressure, and another poster suggested the IAC. From his description and your symptoms, I'd say that would be the first place to look. Here is the link: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...her-start.html
Did it twice today on the 45 min ride home about 10 min into the trip. Did it twice in a row as I let off the gas to coast.
Was thinking that my wife filled the truck up last and I have to see where she bought it. If it was water then I would think that it would do it anytime instead of when I let off or don't have my foot on the gas.
I saw that post and I'll have to check the fuel pressure when I get enough daylight.
Will a bad IAC throw a code in a 99 and how about the COP?
Will a COP show signs it's on it's way out or will they just crap out on you?
Cleaned the IAC real good with throttle body cleaner and it worked. The truck is still running good. 4/7/10

COP would be my last guess. At 94k it is time for new plugs. The guys are right, you need to clean the IAC and check fuel pressure at the fitting. Normally i would think it would be hard to start, but o.k. after startup, if it was the fuel pressure leaking down.- ---when the COPS are off, look for a boot that has damage due to oil or antifreeze soaking. If you see that, then replace that COP.
