Iv'e been told to tighten it until there is some drag on the wheel when you spin it by hand then back off the nut just enough to get rid of the drag, maybe about a 1/4 turn.

Someone smarter than me might have better info.

When I do wheel bearings on any vehicle, I tighten the nut ALL THE WAY until I can't move the wheel. I do this to make sure the bearings are seated in the races. Then I back off a few threads, spin the wheel. I repeat that a couple times until the wheel has a good amount of drag, but spins freely. I can't really explain the proper amount without showing you though...

Basically you don't want the bearing too tight that you can't spin the wheel easily, but you don't want it too loose that you can move the nut by hand. Hopefully this post helps!

If I remember correctly, it is 25, or 30 foot pounds, and then back off the nut a half turn. thats from the shop manual for a 1977 2wd and my memory.

It's definitely a feel thing. Not too loose and not too tight. Actually Ford service manual says to torque inner nut to 50 ft-lbs, while rotating wheel back and forth to seat bearings. Then back nut off 90 degrees. After installing lock ring, install outer lock nut and torque to 50-80 ft-lbs. Hope this helps.

i tighten mine till i have to use both hands to move the rotor. then i back off about a half a turn; just enough so that i can move it with one hand fairly easily but as soon as i let go it stops. then i torque the crap outta the lock nut. not sure if thats right, but it works! lol.

Autozone, I was just looking at and they say 17-25 ft lbs, while spinning the tire, then back off 1/2 turn and then retighten to 10-28 inch lbs. Now again, this is for a 2wd. My shop manual on cd is giving me a fit.

2WD is completely different than 4x4.
