Hello everyone 2001 f250 7.3 mostly stock, 283,000 miles. Truck started fine, warmed up for about 10 mins. Went to leave and engine died. Engine cranks but no smoke or fire. Checked fuel pump, seems ok, checked hpop reservoir it was empty so I filled it up and now it still won't start. I have recharged the batteries so I know they have enough juice. I have rechecked the level in the hpop reservoir and it is still full. Tach moves so I think the cps is good. I don't know why the reservoir was empty but I need to get the engine running to find out. Any suggestions?
HPOP might have leaked down enough to get air in the lines to the injectors. Might take some powerful long cranking to get it back to running. Let's see what the other folks think that are smarter than I am !
If it was running and died I would start with the basics. How is the level of the oil on the truck? If the level is to low it will shut down. Is your WTS light coming on? How about the SES light? Is it or did it come on? Don't take offense to this but did it run out of fuel? Maybe on an incline and too low on the tank? When you turn the key do your hear the fuel pump running? Check to see if there is fuel in the bowl also.
I always check the fuel, last thing ! I've run tractors out and worked on them a while before thinking to check the fuel, I'm ashamed to admit it but I've done it !
I'd like to know if the WTS light is working properly too. Did you check the fuel bowl to see if it was full or empty? Open the drain valve with the key on to check for pressure coming out? Can you hear the fuel pump come on when the key is turned on?
Truck dies suddenly, no smoke while cranking but the tach bounces. I'd be checking fuses. Maybe the fuel bowl heater gave up the ghost.

Tank is full, I can hear the fuel pump run and the filter bowl was full, oil level was a little low but not past the marks on the dipstick, WTS light comes on. I don't know about the SES light, it wasn't lit when the truck was running. I have checked all the fuses and they are good. Anything I'm missing?
Jim and Chris will get you through this, just hang in there. I know it's frustrating when the rig is on "injured reserve". One if them will check in this morning. Here's a bump for ya !
While you are waiting, it might be a good idea to make sure you have good battery voltage. If voltage falls below a certain point the injectors won't work. You may have enough to crank the engine over but not enough to make it start and run. If you have a volt meter check the standing voltage of your "fully charged" batteries. Then, with a helper, check the voltage while actually cranking the truck. I think the voltage has to be above 10v for things to work properly.
If you know anybody with a scanner that will read codes on these trucks that would help as well. Most parts store code readers won't work on the PSD. Knowing the codes can shorten this hunt considerably !
Good deal. They can fool you, they have me. Good luck and I'll check back in later today. Jim and Chris and others may have some more ideas for you so check in when you get home.
Hmmm. Tach bounces, WTS light works and you can hear the fuel pump humming for 20 seconds after the key comes on, yet no smoke out the tail pipe while cranking?
Did you check the fuses with a test light or just give them the eyeball? Try swapping the IDM relay for the heater relay. Also, take the keys out of the ignition and remove the chip so you can eliminate that as a possibility.
I just eyeballed the fuses, I will ohm them out when I get home. Already switched the relays, no go. Haven't removed the chip but will do so tonight. My cps was swapped out about 250,000 miles ago. The tach moves so I am assuming it is still good. Anything else to check?
