unhooking odometer

i was talking to a friend who had a 7.3L.It was a 2000 and he said he unhooked the odometer and the speedometer still worked. Is this even possible, i'm not going to unhook mine, but i'm just wondering if you could.
I'd like to know how so if i ever find a low mileage 7.3 i could check if the did that.
anyone know how the odometer works (diagram)?

I hate trying to find diagrams. It's worse than reading stereo instructions or setting the clock on the VCR.

It's all electrical now, but I was thinking the speedo and odo would still be connected. Why not just ask your friend for more specific info?

sorry, forgot to add. He sold the truck a few years ago and couldn't remember exactly how he did it.

They only reason that I can see to disconnect the odometer is for attempting to defraud by keeping the "mileage down" Such information is not to be passed around FTE
