Has anyone converted a 2wd to 4wd? I'm going to convert my 68 Crewcab to 4wd and I'm looking for some advice before I get started. Links, pics would also be helpful.
Im getting ready to conv using 06 F250 axles so I can keep the front coil spring. Im also conv it from a 360/4spd to a 351W/5spd from a Bronco. Im just starting so I don't have pix yet. If you wanna stay with your lug pattern you can use a dana 44 8 lug from an F-250 (pre 80s they went to TTB front axle) or a dana 60 from a 1-ton truck. The dana 60 will be higher as people are using them for rock crawling cause they are stronger. Expect to pay $800-1000 on the east coast. Not sure about other areas. If you stay with leaf springs you can use the rear perches off a donor frame or the front perches the axle came from (only avail if you have the truck the axle came from). You will also need a steering box from a 4wd that will be installed in front of the axle.
I'm also going to do a Cummins swap, and I will log more highway miles than off-road so I want to keep RPM's down at highway speed. I plan to use a G56 manual 6-speed tranny, and I haven't decided on the T-Case yet. The only gears I could find lower than 3.54 in a heavy enough axle came on '89-'93 Dodge trucks with Cummins enginges. They had Dana 61 and Dana 70U axles in 3.07 or 3.08 gear ratio. These axles also have super heavy duty tubes to handle the torque of the Cummins. Those are the axles I'll use, so I know I'll have to do some fabricating to get them to work. Right now I'm just deciding on leaf springs or some kind of 4-link coilover setup for the front.
