I recently traded a 73' Mustang body for a 72' F100 body. I took out the engine(302) and want to put it in the truck, but I'm told the oil pan will hit the crossmember. I can get the old oil pan from the 351W and use it, but I would have to modify it since my dip stick runs through the block. How do I make sure what kinda oil pan will fit before buying or trading one. As of right now I haven't even tried to get the engine set I was just told this by more experienced people.
Also, don't forget to switch the oil pump pickup tube, they are specific as to whether it's a front or rear sump oil pan. The 302 I dropped in my '67 has a rear sump on it.
the Mustang pan will work only issue is the drain plug on the car oil pans is in a diffrent spot so when you change the oil it will make a mess.most older 2 wheel drive Fords had a front sump pan 67-79 4x4 were rear sumps in the 80s they are all rear sumps and will work also.351w pans are different
So the 351w oil pan wont work at all? I was told that I could cut out the dip stick for the 351 and weld it up and use my dip stick, but I would have to change everything else. Is there a really any reason to change all this besides the oil dain plug issue?
no i would use what you have just a little extra step at oil change time.i had the front sump on mine for a long time but changed to a rear sump because i had it and the engine pulled out.
Ok I will just leave the oil pan for now. What if I want to change it what should I look for? I don't really care to clean up oil every time I change it. I mean the whole powertrain is out and I'm planning on doing the Crown Vic. front suspension modification. Will the pan I have now work for that application?
