CAI recomendatoins

I'm a new member and we're working on my pops truck. So far it has a predator performance chip. I just installed a CAI on my Ecotec engine in my car and pops so impressed by it he wants one for the truck.

over all with the truck we want to keep the chip, open up the air flow in and open up the exhuast out

but when i went to look for a CAI i saw many full kits ranging from 200. to 500,
ive heard AFE was really good for this engine
what ones are ya'll using and which do you recomendations
please include the price and why that one

I would recomend staying stock on the air cleaner. I had a Banks Ram Air, I removed it when all the turbo issues reared there ugly heads. The filtration on the stock filter is awesome and unless you are going above 500 rwhp then that 200-500 can be spent elsewhere. As for a exhaust, get a nice 4" turbo back, keep the kitty or not its up to you and your local laws and such.

I have an MBRP SS turbo back system and its great I love it. Also invest in some guages for that truck. Tuning these trucks is hard on them especially if they are run hard. Also remeber if you play sooner or later you will pay, ie Head Gasket failure greatly increases with tunes.

I am also assuming the truck is a 03-07 with a 6.0 in it. And if you havent already been formally welcomed...then Welcome Aboard. There is also a ton of useful info in the tech folder at the top of the page. Also post your email address in the Information for New 6.0 Owners thread. mark (Bismic) will send you some spreadsheets that have a ton of info. also.

Welcome,

Sarge

As Sarge already mentioned, you don't need to go with an a/m intake unless you plan on doing more modifications then a simple tuner.

Every a/m intake I have seen doesn't flow more air then the stock intake until you get to 3700 rpms, peak hp and tq for this engine is 3300 and 2000 respectively, well outside the range of a stock to slightly modified truck. Couple that with none of the a/m filters filter better then stock, some actually filter worse then stock. Unless you do something to move the rpm range of the engine higher, you aren't going to get much of a benefit of the intake.

The one thing you don't want to do here is say "Well this worked on the other engine or on the car, or on the gas engine, so it should work on this one". There have been a lot of people that have regretted that mistake.

As to the exhaust, Sarge summed it up. Just whatever you do, don't go above 4" unless like the previous answer, you plan on doing more to the engine then just a tuner as you will actually lose low end power if aren't flowing enough fuel and/or air to move thru the bigger exhaust.

Keep the stock intake and spend a hundred of that on a coolant filter. Probably the #1 mod for the money. Your coolers and other items will thank you for it.

Me too, and I will glaldy trade you my AiRaid for your dads stock intake....

This thing whistles all the time. Even under slight acceleration it is WHHEEEEWWWW.... I like the whistle, but I ride through the neighborhood and the dogs all get loud...

I do like the way the 4" Pipe sounds at idle, as it whistles up, and as it whistles down when you cut it off.

stock is good for almost all our trucks. i have a AFE Stage One and I think it's good, fit's and looks just like stock except for the filter inside, and is re-charge able so you don't have to buy stock filters and throw them away. i still have my stock sitting at home though.

Surge, I was responding to the original poster who said he was looking for a CAI for his dads truck.

Sorry for the confusion..

I quoted you because I have basically the same setup with intake and exhaust.

Welcome & have fun giving your Pop a NICE present

Having had the predator myself, I'd sell the predator, buy an sct xcal with custom tuning and forget the CAI...
open up the exhaust with: (in order of cost)
$60 for Walker BTM Muffler - 200 degree cooler egt's and good flow/tone...
$3-400 for a good cat back exhaust
$4-500 for a good turbo back exhaust....

while the last two get the most as far as flow and HP, the Walker BTM sounds good and is easy, but best of all allowed my heavy Ex to go 8.9 in the 1/8th...

good luck...

thanks for the replys, my pops not normally in to modification, but we did get the predator tuner, was a big bang for the buck and we tow a very large 5th wheel camper
we keep the tuner on towing with the 5th wheel attached

we did meet some guys however that said they used the 100hp setting wiht their 5ths wheels but you had to open up the exhaust and air intake first or you would **** up the engine,
they also claimed 19mpg while towing
thats what got my pops attention

they maybe members here
they had identicle longbed white superdutys full cabs both using predators afe's and 4inch exhuast and were brothersinlaw

towing a 5th wheel and getting 19mpg's sounds pretty exaggerated. unless is a mini 5er but still. most can't even get 19mpg's unloaded. also it's not recommended to tow heavy with a 100hp tune. most tow tunes are 40hp-60hp.
