Fuel Guage Problem

Hello, I have an 88 F150 2WD. The gas guage hasn't worked right since I bought it a few months ago. When I first got it the needle would stay on full until there was about a quarter tank left, then it would quickly drop to half, then never go below half. Now it gets to almost dry before it finally drops.

I'm thinking I need a new tank float, but I'm not sure where to get one, or how to install it. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

You will have to buy the sender and pump, the sender is spot-welded on to the pump hanger.

Common problem with some years. Mine does it as well. For me it's not worth the effort to replace the sending unit/float so i just use my trip meter. Reset it at every fill-up. Use worse case for mileage so you don't ever run dry. If you have 2 tanks you have a nice cushion. My back tank does not work.

I use the front tank (16 gallons) and usually fill up between 200 and 220 miles. I get 16-19 MPG but am conservative on the fill up mileage.

My old 96 Ranger's gauge didn't work at all. Used the trip meter there too.

My bug's sending unit doesn't work either.....Hmmmm...a trend here?
Easy fix on that though. Just a matter of available time.

Use the search function on this site and you will find many ideas on how to confront and resolve your fuel gauge issue.

Good luck

Yeah, that sucks, maybe I'll just not bother. Unfortunately, my truck doesn't have the rear tank. I run by the trip meter too, refilling every 200 miles just to be safe. Maybe someday I'll get it fixed, or get a new rear tank.

Thanks for the replies.
