I just bought the truck and when i went to fill it up the tank was full up to the bottom of the neck, but the guage only reads half a tank. any help would be helpful.
Many things it could be but it's probably in the tank. Either the electrical part of the "sender" unit or the hollow brass float attached to it got a pinhole leak in it and has a little gas in it. Can't float to the top. First, with key on, ground the wire at the sender and see if the gauge swings all the way over.

The float is made from two pieces of copper soldered together. Solder breaks down, gas seeps in, float settles towards the bottom of the tank.

OP didn't say if this is the in-cab fuel tank sender or the optional 25 gallon auxillary fuel tank (if so equipped) sender.
Assuming it's the in-cab tank sender:
