Transmition went into limp mode. Chganged control module and 20amp maxi fuse in position 22. Worked for a bit but now the fuse blew again. Any ideas to what the cause might be?
Thanks
Thanks. 1992 had some changes over earlier years. One of the changes was to move the OD cancel switch from the dash to the end of the shift lever.
I heard the wires in the shift lever can get frayed through the insulation on the column end of the shift lever inside the column itself. I read a post on a similar problem like this a little while ago. Trying to find it now.....
Its usually VERY rare for a PCM in these trucks to ever fail, but there are other electrical gremlins that can develop over the years.
It's the wire coming out of the shift arm for the overdrive off switch up on the column. Take the plastic cover off and tape the wires up where they rubbed through just outside of the shifter. Very common problem on Fords. I used to fix at least three of these a day when I worked at the tranny shop. I might be just one tiny little area on it but it's there. In fact I just fixed on with the same issue yesterday on a Texas DOT truck
Thanks goes out to Brimmstone for this one (originally posted on Oilburners.net)
The original poster for the above reply had the main PCM fuse blowing out instantly, and frayed wires turned out to be the problem as described in the quote.
Hey thanks alot. Extremely prompt and helpful. More questions will follow. I will look into it as soon as I have time. I have never taken the steering colunm apart. Anything I should know?
Thanks again
Should be a plastic cover held on with screws that gives access to the inside end to the shift lever. My truck is an 86 though so maybe some one with your era of truck can be more specific.
