hello people i have a 84 f150 302,C4 tranny,3.08 gears. my question is how do i go about getting a new drive shaft for this when i switch over to an AOD tranny. also should i get it rebuilt, and a new converter? my rebuilt 302 will be pushing out between 300-330hp. oh and i'm going with shorty headers as well
If you really expect to have that much horsepower, and are going to use it, then you definitely need it rebuilt and upgraded at the same time. Do a search on the web and get some info on what the upgraded parts are for this tranny, and then see if your local rebuilder is familiar with these.
On the driveshaft, first find a place locally that will make or modify the one you have. They will tell you how to measure for it once you get the tranny in place. Or, if yours is going to be a standard setup, you could go to Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market and plug in your area and your combination, and see if a junkyard will have one.
franklin2 thanks for the tip and it is going to be making that power. i considered keeping the C4 because it's solid but i was worried about the mpg when i put it on the road. but it won't be on the road(hwy) that much maybe twice a year about 300 miles round trip. mainly a go to work truck!! i also thought about just changing out the gears but i don't know what to put back there.
If your 302 is making 300+ hp, then do not lower the rear gears for fuel mileage. A small engine making that much horsepower is going to need to rev higher, and will have less torque down low, and is not going to be very good on gas.
so should i just leave the tranny and rear graers alone however, i do want it to be a little quick but i won't be racing it at all. i just want a fun dependable daily driver...
Are you sure it's a C4 and not a C6? C4's I don't think were offered in 84, Could have been replaced, but that would have made me wonder about the PO. C4's stopped going in these trucks in '81 I think.
OK, my 2 cents. The C4 is "sound", and was/is a working trans when you tore it down? If so, I would run it. A 3.08 with a truck size tire of 29+ " is reasonably tall gearing wise.
For example, with a 29 inch tire, your 3.08s are going to have you turning 2320 rpm at 65 mph. (28 mph per 1000 rpm, you can figure the rest)
Sort out your new engine, and see how it performs for your needs.
A beefed AOD is expensive. Check the items here. You might find a trans shop that knows what they are doing that could replicate some of this and get you rolling for far less. Note you should use an '88-'93 trans from a truck or V8 car.
kool that's great info. my tire size is 235/70/15 i think but that's close to what i'm running. i think that i'll use the tranny and rear that i have for a few months and if i like it i'll stick with that... this way i can look into paint & body work...hey send some truck pic here's my e-mail ladelld33@yahoo.com pictures of cool fords and engines would really make the next 5 months go quicker!!!!
235/70x15 = 28 inch tire. If it's a little too low gear wise, you can go up a size and switch to a 75 series tire and drop a couple hundred rpm at highway speed.
BTW, that tire/gear combo is 27 mph per 1000 rpm, not a big difference from the above example.
ok! i think i'll just leave the drive line alone & build my engine. i do thank you all for the advice....you guys keep them running & i'll keep the roads clear!!! USAF!!
