hello. a while ago i posted that i had a 3.8v6 with a c5 tranny and i was going to drop a jasper rebuilt inline 6 in its place. well i pulled both motors and found out that the inline wont bolt up to my c5 because of the kick down rod for the tranny... sooo either change the tranny over to a c6 and cut my drive shaft and change the cross member....or just find a 302 and use the same tranny. i found one and am waiting for the junk yard to get it running so i can make my decision. so now im stuck untill wednesday without a truck. so be aware of this snag before you pull
The C5 was only offered behind the 3.8, it's got a lock up torque converter, and isn't as strong as a C4. I'd suggest finding another transmission no matter what engine you put in there.
i also have a smaller inline (i have no clue what the displacement is) that came out of a 77 maverick. it also has a what a believe to be a c4... what do you guys think about this trans? will it work?
Swap in a C6. Does a C5 have a vacuum modulator on it? If it does, it'll still downshift, but not like it should normally, which means you can use it in a pinch.. I'd run it until you find a c6
if i did choose to run the c5 would i need to change the torque converter? if so which one should i get? also, what about the c4 i have??? should it bolt up? i want to stay away from the c6 cause id have to change everything (drive shaft, cross member, all that crap) the c4 and c5 are almost identical ...im only 18 and insurance is buring me alive...I HATE NEW JERSEY

A C4 or C5 will fit and bolt up to a 3.8 V6, a 4.9 I6, 289/302/5.0, or a 351W/5.8
The differences are in the "strength" of the trans for each application and the different flex plates for each engine. That's where you'll have trouble. The 3.8 uses a 157 tooth flexplate and I'm pretty sure I6's all use 1 64 tooth one which is also larger in diameter. The larger flexplate won't fit in the 3.8 tranny's smaller bellhousing. If the 3.8's flexplate might work (not sure of the balance on it) then the "separator plate's" hole for the starter will be a 1/2 inch off. IF-big if-the separator plate off the 3.8 can be used, then you've got a shot.
A 3.8 doesn't make much torque so obviously will be the weakest C4/C5 of the bunch. One can be upgraded to V8 or I6 specs but will work as is if you take it easy on it. There's no way it'll last a very long time though. A 4.9 (or 300 if you like) is reknowned for making torque for it's size. Ford made it that way. Hence the stronger C6 is standard equipment behind one. You'll be wanting one sooner or later, likely sooner.
The kickdown is likely best solved by reversing the arm and rigging up a cable of some sort. Likely more trouble than it's worth though. I've actually known people to ditch the kickdown because they prefer to downshift manually. No harm in it if done with care.
Hope I didn't miss mentioning anything.
and for 35-911, you can stick with the AOD when converting to EFI. EFIs also had the AOD. you just simply need to get the TV cable from an EFI engine and your all set.
also, when it comes down to old cars and trucks, Never ask a stealership. 99% of the time, they dont know squat about cars older than 6 years.
