Yesterday I purchased a 1995 F250 351. Not only is it my first 250, it is my first 351. I now own or have owned 300's and 302's. I think the 300 is the best engine ever made, by Ford or anyone else, but it does not have the rumble that I crave.
Just so excited I had to tell someone. When I get it home I will take some pics and post.
You're going to love the power from that 351, just don't expect the bottom end torque of the 300. i have a 302, and have been used to 300's for years...I mist that kind of torque.
Thanks guys, I was wondering about the low end. I didn't think it would be the same. And, I plan to beef it up a bit. Not sure what modifications are out there, but I am all giddy with anticipation.
the mods out there are basically the same as any other v8 heads cams roller cams roller rockers headers intake manifolds carbs or fuel injection bull**** stall converters blah blah blah

I don't know about that... I have never seen a 300 powered truck break tires loose like my 351 did. All stock the 5.8 is a bit of a pooch but it's easily upgraded to a level the 300 can't touch.

Not to argue with you here, but I've owned 3 of the 4.9s in the past that had pulling power in stock form that would put the 302 and 351 to shame. Pulling power is in the torque numbers and gearing ratios, not raw horsepower. Besides, the 4.9 was not built for speed, it was built as the workhorse of the F series powerplants.
You're correct on the engine easily being upgraded though.
Might just be me but i think long tube headers did alot for it. I was thinkin about a k&n air filter. good idea?
If you route the filter to an area where it will get cooler air and is less restrictive. It won't do much for HP gains, but will increase mpg. Stay away from things such as TB spacers and anything that claims to put the intake air into a vortex before entering the intake...nothing more than snake oil.
The LT headers are a great addition to this engine, as is a free flowing cat and exhaust. getting the engine to breathe better is probably one of the first and best steps to take, expecially if this is a driver while being a build project.

Yes in stock form.. the I6 is impressive compared to the others in terms of all out grunt. But that table is way to easy to turn completely in favor of the 5.8, add longtubes and a cam and it produces more TQ from idle up and close to twice the HP, all with stock drivability and no computer issues. The 5.8 can deliver the best of both worlds but you'll want a manual transmission to get the highest milage figures, the E4OD simply revs it too much to get sensible milage.
You guys and your six garbage. Ive owned all three engines in trucks and vans. The pre 94 351 stock will walk all over the 300, let alone an F4TE engine. With the right gears, 3.55 and above, a 5.0 will walk all over a 300 and still get better mileage. Everytime I come back to this site, its seems like the 6 talk is even more exaggerated. First it was the 302, and now the 300 has more power than a 351. Get real. The 300 six is a bulletproof engine, no doubt, but it is no powerhouse, there was a reason it was the BASE engine in all trucks, cheapness.
I understand 300's may hit their torque peak sooner, but do they really produce significantly more torque (by the numbers) down low than the 351?
Strictly by the numbers the I6 was rated at 260 ft/lbs at 2000rpm and the 5.8 at 300-325 ft/lbs at 2800rpm. You have to extrapolate the curve back down to 2000rpm but even if the 5.8 is down 50 ft/lbs that just puts it on par with the I6 at that engine speed and everywhere else the 5.8 owns it.

There is nothing wrong with getting headers, if you can find some that fit good. Well except for possibly breaking off a bolt in the head.
Personally I would not bother with K&N. They are a pain to clean. I have had them before. I don't want to fool with the whole cleaning and oiling process anymore. Also, I have seen that it really lets in more dirt than the OE style element does. Also, the more the KN gets washed the material starts to degrade. Think of clothes that have been washed many times and become worn out.
I have disposed of all of our KNs for one reason or another. Mine had small holes in the cotton gauze. The one on our Cobra fell apart. The one on our Honda actually ripped. These were all the drop in replacement filters.
I have had the FIPK also. That is a total waste, it just sucks in hot air. My truck also did not run as good with it installed. When I had the my fuel economy went down. I had a replacement KN as well. I get the best fuel economy with a OE style filter. That leads me to believe that it is also running the best.
