I may be getting a great deal on a working e40d I was wondering what I could do to it to make it perform better in my 95 2wd dually that I tow a 35' fifth camper with. I am not looking to spend a fortune on this thing or rebuild it just lookin to upgrade it
thanks
Tom
Call up BTS and get one of there valve bodies, only a few hundred bucks and then get a mag hytec aluminum finned pan to add some capacity and cooling ability. I would also get a larger tranny cooler.
A larger pan WILL NOT help cool the trans. It looks good, but doesn't help the trans in any way. If you want to know why do a search. I've typed it enough times already.

hey mark, not every body can be a former ford automatic transmission engineer, or has been one for over 10 years. if he was- he wouldnt be asking. if you were as smart as an engineer, you might consider "saving" what you ve "typed enough times already." that way you can post it again for "those of us who dont know everything."
what he said^^^^... i ran a search and came up with nothing so far. so your saying that on a manual tranny adding 3 quarts of capacity to a tranny that only holds almost 4 quarts WILL NOT cool the tranny?? the reason i say that is b/c there are coolers for manual trannys that go where the PTO covers are. they stick out a little bit and add capacity. this HAS to cool the tranny somewhat. there is more fluid to disipate the heat as well as more surface area on the tranny with outside air passing by to cool it down. the difference may not be huge, but it has to happen. i would assume the same with the auto tranny pan. it is larger, holds more fluid, more surface area, more fluid, runs cooler.
Now, Call Brian at BTS and get one of his valve bodies as mentioned above, better tranny cooler, and maybe even get a standalone module to control the tranny. i hear those things are awesome b/c you can control them however you want.
Brian @ BTS actually advises not to use the mag hytec tranny pan b/c they cool too much and the tranny doesn't get up to temp. thats what i heard anyways. call him and ask
as long as you get a bigger better trans cooler youll be fine as far as the bigger pan you also gotta keep in consideration that the more fluid you have the more fluid you have to keep cool you can also save yourself some money and do c00ns valve body mod for FREE i did it a long time ago and love it just my .2
I agree with Mark on the cooling thing.
It will take longer to come up to temp with more fluid in
the system. Running temp is about the same.
+ 's of a higher cap pan is fluid will last longer due to the addition of
cap. If the pan is a non stamped one it will add strenght to the trans
case which is a good thing in my book.
I was looking at a new torque converter ,but they are a little more than what I am looking to spend. Unless someone has one laying around that they want to get rid of at a good price I will prob go with the coon mod a shift kit and a larger cooler I have one now ,but bigger is always better and too much is just enough
I would go with one of racers triple disc's. if you can afford it go billett, but i would call racerx and see what he recommends to do... maybe a 40000 gvwr tranny cooler!!! clutch kit, sonnax shift kit??? valve body? maybe THE CURE????
Mark and Bill are absolutely right. They should be commended for being here to answer these questions. Arguing any point is pointless and foolish. I thank both of them for being here. I've learned allot form both of them.
