I'm trying to get information ahead to time, before I start dismantling/fabricating on my '56. The ultimate goal is a diesel powered dually, that will handle a 14k fifthwheel safely.
What front axle(s) or suspension systems will fit under the truck. I must have disc brake capability.
What is the narrowest 10.5 or Dana 60/80 that can be fitted with disc brakes? I plan on tubing the rear wheel wells and possibly widening the bed a couple of inches and using the available wider rear fenders.
I'm not an expert on frames swaps but you may want to look into it if you are going to haul real heavy loads or look at the 56 big truck frames. I don't think the original frame will take it.
I'm either going to box the original the full length, or make an entirely new frame. I'm hoping to get the strength and power and still keep the truck low and looking like a pickup.
Fabrication is not a problem, just trying to find out which later model axles/brakes will fit under the body without custom narrowing ($$$).
I'm working on a 1954 F350 flatbed with dual wheel. I put a DANA 70 out of a 1985 F350 cab & chassis under mine. It bolted in with no modifications except for shortening driveshift. It fit under there really nice. The 80's & 90's era F350 cab & chassis frames are 34" wide at the back, like the 50's ford trucks. The spring pads are 40" center to center like the original axel, and axel tube was the same at 3.5" dia. The axel was only 2" wider on each side. It measures 86" overall from outside to outside of dually rims.
