I am going to be looking at an 01 diesel excursion 4x4 with 114000 miles, it is a limited model. Any common problem with them? My biggest concern is with the the front wheel bearings. How long do they typically last before they need to be replaced? I have a 96 4x4 crew cab short box auto 7.3 that I get 16-18 mpg around town/short trips and 20 mpg on longer drives, what is the typical mileage for the 7.3 excursions? Thanks for any help.
the some of the 01's have the mechanical diode in the tranny you want to avoid. I did a post a while back on the topic with how to read build dates on the tranny here is the cut and paste
here is a picture of the Transmission ID tag located on the driver side of the tranny just in front of the transfer case above the front driveshaft
The date code is the 4 digits after the letters BD (Build Date) for my picture here, 1 is for the year (2001), F is the month (6th letter of alphabet = 6 month of the year{June}. the last 2 digits(12) are the day it was built,
June 12, 2001... So my tranny does not have the mechanical diode...
So if this did have the mechanical diode and it developed this problem, does the transmission need to be completely disassembled to replace it? How unreliable is this diode problem? Thank you.
Unfortunately it has a 2000 build date on the transmission. Would a tranmission from a new excursion or superduty go in there with no electrical issues? We just got back from test driving it, seems to shift fine. Does feel like a rumble in the 50mph range but not sure if it just the tires, they are brand new and fairly aggressive. Feels like at 60 it smooths out, so I am thinking more of a balance issue.
There is also an oil leak from the trans inspection cover, with oil in the engine valley. There is a puddle behind the HPOP but can't really tell where it originates. My 96 is dry in the valley. Also noticed some oil around the intercooler boot on the hot side, from the turbo, but that might be from the crank case vent?
As far as the wheel bearings go, my first one went at 183k. You cannot replace just the wheel bearing though, you have to replace the hub. It's only $350, and it took me and a buddy 45min to do.
Book time is 2.5 hours, so that seems a little high even. I went with genuine ford from my dealer, and it was $350 for the whole hub. If you go with aftermarket wheel hub and save $50-100 depending, and the speed sensor goes, you have to replace the hub. However with the OEM you can replace the speed sensor alone. I did mine not long ago. It may be different for the 01 vs 04, but I can't imagine it being a whole lot more. Call your dealer and ask them. It's not a bad job to do yourself if you have a 12,000lb lift, all the ring pullers, air tools, and so on, to do it right. We were rushing a little, as we wanted to get out to the golf course, but not much, and even road tested it to make sure everything was ok. It can be done on a set of jacks easily enough if you get the whole front end up, it might take a bit longer, but I prefer the lift, as it's so much easier and safer.
i am looking one myself with 140k miles just like that one, i ran the car fax and the manufacture date is 8/15/00. Would this be the same as the build date for the tranny?? Might explain why it is 11K. It sucks because thats exactly what I was looking for.
The auto trannies in stock form are the weak link in the 7.3 Excursions and Super Duties. That's why my '01 F250 is a 6-speed manual. However, once refurbished and beefed up by a good trans shop, they seem to do well. If you could only get the Torqshift behind the 7.3...
$11000, doesn't sound to bad. The one we are looking at is asking like $13900, but looked it over yesterday and it needs the driver side wheel bearing assemble, passenger side upper ball joint and both locking hub assemblies, rear pinion seal leaking, looks like the orings from the high pressure oil lines from the pump are leaking and the front pads wore down to about a 1/3-1/4. Even though it is not the ideal trans in it, we both like it so will try to "negotiate" it with the dealer.
I just spoke with the 60yr old lady that owns it, she said it is in very good shape and has never towed anything with it. She said it did not get good mpgs, she said 18 but again she drives a diesel bug also so I thought that was good. I am goin to check it out this weekend if she has not sold it already.
