As a HAPPY ford owner, I am debating selling my truck (06 cc 6.0 Lariat 4x4 34K mi.) and getting an Excursion.
This decision is causing me great trepidation, as I am very comfortable with my truck. BUT, I really could use the extra space inside a vehicle. My truck has a fancy shell, but it is just not the same.
My major hang-up about this is which year to buy. I have read about the upgrades for the different model years, but don't really know if each one is much better than the one it replaced (what is worth it). To those with a 2000-01 model, what do you wish was better?
Can anybody give me insight as to the value of the "better" suspension mentioned in 2003(?) or anything else which might determine what year to look for?
1. 2003 with the 7.3 Diesel
2. 2004-2005 with the 6.0 Diesel
3. 2005 V-10 (only if your not towing heavy and don't mind lower mpg's)
I see you have a 6.0 Diesel so I am just assuming that you would get another Diesel. Once you have a Diesel it's hard to go back!
The 7.3 is a bulletproof motor, the 6.0 has much more power but has a few issues that need to be addressed to make it a reliable engine for the long term. The V-10 is great if you don't care about rotten mpg's and rotten power! I have driven 2 V-10's and they wouldn't even come close to my 6.0 empty or towing!
Yes I would like a diesel, but I was just more concerned with any other items which may have been modified during the production run, and how much of a benefit they were. I know trhe headlights changed, but did anything else make a major difference in driveability?

Thanks again
All years have a leaf spring suspension. Some of the earlier models did not come with sway bars. The front end changed in 05 to the cool looking chrome grill. You can buy that grill for the older models on E-bay though, that's what I did! The 5spd AT only came with the 6.0 in 03, 04, 05. The 7.3 comes with the 4spd. AT. Has your 6.0 been good to you? I own an 04 6.0 Eddie Bauer Ex and I love it! I don't really think there are a ton of differences throughout the Excursion run, other than minor styling and powertrain changes. The newer ones also have DVD players in the EB & Limited versions.
my '04 XLT has the dvd player also. it is optional in all of them.
and hes right there isnt really much changes. the earlier trannys worry me alittle bit. but otherwise it really comes down to what motor you want. otherwise find one you like and get it
As for my diesel, it has been pretty good. I love the power, but the noise bothers me a little (my doctor has noted I am getting hard of hearing). Had the turbo replaced at 33K mi, and now it runs like a champ - better than when it was new (after a good diesel tech in Colorado did the work- I am from california).
If you like the 6.0 as much as I do, get yourself a late '05 truck as it has the actual 2005 engine. The early to mid '05s have the late '04 carry over engines.

the 6.0 has issue's with head gasket's, and any mod's seem to make it worse except having the head bolts traded out for studs. My 7.3 at nearly 100k has only needed batteries & tires. Gasers are either very thirsty or very weak.

But very cheap. You can find a 2000 Excursion with a V10 for HALF price of its equivalant diesel. ($5000 - $6000 compared to $10000 - $12000)
For Pete's sake, Scottman, dorkle, lay off the V10s being "thirsty, weak, ...rotten mileage, rotten power". You're talking out your ear.
The "Crappy V10" thread is amusing, but hardly based on anything close to facts.
OP didn't say what he was looking for the truck to do, but for a large number of users, the V10 has more than sufficient power, and the mileage tradeoff is not near as significant as most diesel owners make it out to be. Might I suggest we all focus the posts in this thread on providing the OP useful information that might help his decisionmaking process?
I've got no problems with the smack-talking done tongue in cheek, but this seems like an honest request for good info, not BS. And a large portion of the diesel owners out there don't need the incremental increase in power delivered by the diesel, they have it for other reasons (fuel efficiency/savings doesn't pass the fact-check in most of those instances either).
I have an 04 6.0 with 189k and it's running like a rock. 20.2 mpg on the highway, 13-15mpg around town, and I drive it like I stole it. Got a ticket the other day actually, 52mph in a 25, I was 100 yards from my house, and just easing on the throttle... by my definition anyways.
I think another question to answer is what do you want to spend, and do you want to MOD the truck or would you be happy with a basically stocker.
One thing you have to do, is drive them, drive both.
the 7.3 while bulletproof for the most part, does not drive the same as the 6.0 and since you already have the 6.0 you may find that the 7.3 is not the kind of acceleration you want.
I put a mild chip in my 7.3 and "woke it up" but it's mild, still gets good MGP on the hwy and made the truck easier to drive and tow with.
I have seen some 7.3 4x4 in the high teens for resale - think around 14-17k for a price
Here is one thing to remember, if you find what you are looking for DON"T WAIT - there are plenty of stories on here about someone going home to think about it on a Wednesday night and by Friday the truck was already sold.
There are plenty of 7.3 hunters out there and since nothing compares to what you get in a diesel powered Ex, they go quick.
