I would need a little bit of notice too. Not because of work, but because my two little ones require way more scheduling and planning than was ever mentioned to me in one of those "birds & bees" conversations! Saturdays or Sundays are best for me!
Once did a really cool run up around Crown King. We were heading up the dirt road, took a random side road, it got narrow and we soon started seeing Private Property signs, but we kept going (I know, I know). We eventually wound up at this little house in the side of the hill, there was this really cool old guy up there raising chickens; it was truly an incredible homesite even tho the house was old (was also on old '70s F250 up there). Anyway, the guy was so nice and told us we could go on if we wanted, so we took the turn around his place and it got steeper, definitely 4lo terrain. The trail got REALLY tight, just brush and brances on both sides constantly scraping the truck until it finally let up in more rocky terrain. We went down and to the left, but coulda gone up and to the right where a F.S. sign said "4wd required." We went thru a fairly rocky wash (there was a sign that said it was adopted by a local 4wd club) and finally came out on a dirt road. We had no idea where we were but wound up in Cooter (sp?).
I'd be surprised if this rings a bell with anyone, but it was really cool up there.
There are a LOT of roads and trails up there and some VERY beautiful scenery. Did you end up in "Cooter" or "Cleator"? I know where Cleator is. Never been to or heard of Cooter up there...
This an e-mail I got, I'm just passing along the infor for him:
I can't seem to get a password for the truck enthusiasts website, but I thought I should let someone know that the backroad to Crown King can be bad news. I almost lost my 79 Lariat up there. It took me two days to get it back to town. I don't even attempt it with a truck anymore, just my Banshee. The guy with the brand new F-350 longbed had better be prepared to bring home a truck worth alot less than it is now. That's if he even makes it to C.K., there are some pretty tight areas. Like I said I'm not taking my truck up there again, it's only got 44,000 original miles (one owner) and I plan to keep it a little longer. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a novice, nor have I babied the truck, but I don't feel like tearing it up for no good reason. If you could pass this on to those people considering going, at least they would know what to expect. Let me know what you all decide.
Thanks
Joe
I thought I would post it for him since he is having trouble with the board.

This is a great quote!!!! Thanks for the warning!
"Off road" to me really means "dirt road with washboards". I had a beater Jeep a few years back that I actually took "off road" but I certainly would not risk my brand-spankin new truck really off roading.
Have fun in Box Canyon! That is a great area, with MILES of roads and trails. Actually running the canyon isn't too difficult. It can get pretty narrow in some sections, but I've seen plenty of full size vehicles through there. Excursions and everything. It's really fun in the spring when the water is running...
As far as Crown King, there are a couple of different routes up there. The route that I took was not that bad. I saw entire groups of vehicles (many of them looked completely stock) making that trip. When I went, there was two of us. I had a GMCrap truck on 35's. My friend had a bone stock Jeep with the 4 banger. He was running on the stock street tires. Probably had less than 8" of clearance! Both of us made it with little problems, and absolutely NO DAMAGE. At no time were we even at risk of damaging either vehicle. Now, I will add that this was roughly 5 years ago, and things can definately change. However, having driven that once, I wouldn't hesitate to take my 4 door, long bed on the trip.
