Yes the beamed rangers (83-97) are a decent platform to start with and they are semi cheap to build... BUT these 70's trucks can be had cheaper and are just as inexpensive to build. Plus if you get a 75 or older here in CA you don't have to smog it. Everybody and their brother builds a ranger. Be different and build a dentside!
I am making a new mold for fenders as well. 5" flare per side - should be done by mid November.
Oh - here is a pic of my newest truck that I've done a tiny bit of work on...
It will be getting a full build soon

and here is one hell of a badA$$ dentside!!!!!

What used to be an 89 ranger pictures by ChaseTruck754 - Photobucket - feel free to snoop around the photobucket more if you want to see pics of my other projects.
Ranger was a full tube frame, a-arm, 4 link monster that I don't have the time to finish. It will cost a ton to finish and then to prep/maintain when it's done.
The ranger has been an off and on build for like 6 years. Ok - so it's been more off than on as most of the build was done in the 1st 2 years - but you get the point. It's sitting in my shop feeling neglected.
That's where the supercab came in. I had a bunch of parts for the ranger that can be used on it (race built c6, shocks, seats, 35 spline - full floater 9", etc. etc.) as well as full fiberglass I was going to run on the crew. I figured I could throw an autofab suspension on one of these 70's trucks then throw some ranger parts at it and have a toy I could drive again.
Once I made up that decisionI patiently waited for a short bed, 2wd supercab (I want 4 seats in it
) to come up for a decent deal and I found this one.Since I am having the custom fender molds made I threw my autofab stuff and 35's on it right away and sent it off to Vegas to get the molds started.
Hopefully the crew will be running by the time it comes back and then I can jump on it.
My plan is to get it running 1st (it needs a motor - so I'm going 351w) and then drive it as I build.
Plans right now are:
351w with Culhane built race c6 and a gearvendors OD.
Full cage bumper to bumper - with 4 race buckets in the cab.
35" tires (I have lots of BFG Projects and Bajas)
Front susp: Autofab beams and coils for now - going to beams I will make, radius arms I will make and a 2.5" coil over with a 3" 3 tube bypass up front.
Rear susp: Stock leaves for a bit - then to the 64" deavers I grabbed and probably a 4 link eventually. I have 2.5" c/o's and 3" bypasses for the back as well
Full fiberglass consisting of my 5" flare fenders and an autofab drop center hood and bedsides.
That's the gist of it. Should be one hell of a looker and a runner. As for weight - no issue at all that I can see. It won't be as light as a buggy - but who cares!!!
If/when I 4 link it I will shorten the wheel base to about 125" - but for now it's just a play toy so it will be fine.
As for the $$ to do this... Well - I have a good job that pays well. I went to school and got my BS and then graduated and got my license. My job also keeps me on the computer pretty much all day everyday so 99.99% of my parts are bought used and at GREAT deals. I also buy and turn tools and trucks for project $$
