New to the whole vehicle that can be easily taken down to frame (used to unibodies).
Are there any walkthroughs on the proper way to take the bed off of our trucks (74 f100). Mine is in bad shape, especially the bed pan, and I think a complete replacement would be a better option than panel replacement. Since I already had taken off and replaced a front quarter panel the wrong way (without taking off the front clip) I figured I'd ask you guys instead of banging my head against a wall.
seems that
remove bolts that hold bed to frame
remove tail light harnesses
remove filler neck & vent to bed side.
double check everything is detached.
get a 12 pack, call some friends to heave it off. might need something pursuasive
to get them to help lift the bed.
i might have missed somthing. someone chime in please.
You won't need a lot of beer/friends, an 8 foot bed weighs 370 lbs give or take. 4 should be able to do it easily.
A chain fall and a light duty frame work of 4X4's works well too. One across and under the side rail will do, but it's a little precariously balanced. An H-frame is more stable and safer.
You need to soak the bed bolts with penetrating oil a few times and I have had to grind the heads off on one bed to remove them, they were so rusted.
You will need a 3/4" six point socket with a universal joint and extension, to get to some of them. These are special bolts and should not be replaced by a soft carriage head bolt from a hardware store.
The fuel hoses attached to the filler neck are difficult to remove. Just keep working around the lip of them with a screwdriver while trying to turn them but be careful not to tear them. Take your time they are not cheep.
If its a junk box you are going to get rid of , just grind off the bolts inside (topside) of the box and tip it off.
Make sure and undo the gas fiollers and the tailights!
the bed is in pretty bad shape. It will probably be a grind job. Thanks a ton all, now I just need to find a replacement. It is only a 6' bed, so should be pretty easy to remove.
to lift it off, if you can't talk your friends into helping, use a cherry picker and tie heavy rope thru the corner stake pockets, right front to left rear, left front to right rear, and lift in the middle, set the ropes right, and the bed comes off nice and level, if you've got some old seat belts laying around, they make excellent hoist ropes, if you don't have a cherry picker, get 3 16 or 18 foot 2x8s, tie them together at the top to form a teepee frame, hang a hoist from the center, and you can lift it with that. After you loosen the gas tank filler hoses, take a big pair of channellocks, or vice grips, put a towel on the hose to protect it, grip the hose and rock it back and forth, and that should loosen it without damaging it I've got a shortbed taken off a truck here in Los Angeles, if you're interested call me at 818 481-8952
