The timing you are talking about is Injection event timing. MOST, not all tuners advance the injection timing, and to get it right can be a little tricky. Since you are talking about an Edge, give Bill at Power Hungry Performance a call and he can help you determine whats best for your truck.

Yes, people who do the programming for these trucks "play" with the injection timing by way of a whole lot of different SOI (start of injection) maps in the tuning software.

There is nothing in the Evolution that is going to allow you to blow your truck up. I'm pretty sure that there is a limit to how much SOI you can dial into the programming. I know that the Sniper Special Forces programming (which is a pretty generic end-user tuning program) only allows an advancement of 6 degrees but it's not a full 6 degrees across the board.

If you were to factor in every part of the SOI advance programmed into our trucks by "custom" tuners in the higher-HP settings, you'd be floored at how early all of the maps command an injection event.

If your Evo is allowing you up to 6 or so degrees, I'd put it all in. They're not going to sell you anything that will allow you to blow your engine because I'm sure they've accounted for the "idiot factor". Not saying you're an idiot but there are a lot of them out there.

Listen to the advice you've already been given. Bill at Power Hungry Performance wrote all the tunes for the Edge, so call him if you have questions, of just ditch the cheap Edge and for about the same money buy a chip from Bill that will run circles around the Edge, regardless of what setting you have it on.

Also listen to Cody in regards of how to set the timing. The Edge won't give you a big enough option to hurt your motor, so go with whatever you want, or as mentioned, step up to a real programmer. If for some reason you don't like Bill, Jody and Tony also offer some good tunes that will put the Edge to shame.

Ha, They custom send you a program? Does a stock 7.3 no programmer have a high idle program to it?

It all depends on what you call a high idle program. A stock 7.3 will idle up a few hundred rpms when the EBPV closes on a cold morning to facilatate a quicker warm up, but with Bill, Jody, or tony, they can write youa true high idle program. My #2 setting on my DP chip is a 1200rpm high idle

For me, its a situation were I am using the truck's alternators. (I have two, and they run seperate battery systems) More then once I have needed to charge, and then jump start a generator, 50+ feet away, and only having number 8 wire. (Hense the charge time) Alternators make significantly less current at idle.

EDIT: Its also on high idle when I NEED IT to be. Not when the truck feels like it.

It's great for providing power for lights or other accessories when parked, or if you have on-board belt-driven air, or getting the AC to blow a bit colder if you're in a hot climate... I have it, and it's pretty handy.

Custom tuning is the only way to go with these rigs.

Your Edge, compared to Jody at DP-Tuner, Bill at PHP, or Tony Wildman is like comparing a paint ball gun to a .45 caliber hand gun.

A pen light to the sun.

A small leak/drip to Niagara Falls.

A model rocket to the Space Shuttle.

A dirt clod to a meteor.

A tub full of water to the Pacific Ocean.

Ok, ok...those last 5 were for humors sake, but I think you get the drift!

1200 rpm High idle = quicker warm-ups in the AM. I also have an AIC so I can crank the idle up more for jump starting.
