I'm replacing my 351 windsor with a rebuilt long block and i was wanting to stick a set of headers on it while its out I was looking at the bbk mustang shorties. I found a couple used sets pretty cheap. Are these going to work out ok on the windsor? any issues or damage done? thanks much
302 headers will fit on the 351w block, but they usually won't fit in the truck, even if they are truck headers. The 351w is wider than the 302, and it makes more difference than you would think. Mustang headers fitting a truck? That might be even more of a stretch, though maybe someone has tried it.
I was just looking for a cheaper alternative but it sounds like a no go, the actual long tube headers they sell for the 150 look to be around $165 and not much of a used market out there. When you find used they are still $125ish. where I'm finding 5.0 shorties everywhere for cheap $20-$40 range. I think I will bolt the manifolds back on and forget it. thanks for the help. Rich
If you keep looking you'll find some. I got a pair off Ebay for $65+ shipping that was brand new ( it's been a while, but IIRC they were Hedman's ), but I didn't realize they were for 4wheel drive so I resold them. I then picked up a set of Flowtechs that had never been run for $30 off Craiglist (no shipping-yea!).
I didn't realize those crazy Mustang guys were giving away their BBK's. Those prices are more like what I've seen the factory ones going for, and they aren't much of an upgrade over a 351W manifold at all.
I've never heard of one story of someone buying long tube headers for a 4x4 5.0 F-150 and just working perfectly. Something always needs to be bent, shaved, or you can't remove your starter or touch the spark plugs when done.
If anyone knows of the perfect set, please, share the wealth. I'm wanting some bad.
You forgot the bolts come loose, they blow the gaskets and cook the starter. Sounds like headers to me.
I installed the MAC shorty mustang headers a few years ago. At the time, it was the only header that would fit the GT40P heads. They shouldn't be any different than other mustang headers, just extra space for the new plug location.
I actually like the install. They are well away from the starter, and I have only tightened them once after install. They also have the ball and socket style collector which I think is WAY better than the gasket style. The ball and socket allows for more errors as well when installing a custom exhaust.
After having them, I would never go back to long tube headers. The long tube may give you an extra horse or two, but not worth the hassle, expecially in a 4x4 truck (transfer case in the way).
I think it would be tough to say that short tube would not give you much increase in power over stock manifolds. The MAC's are at least half in inch larger and have smooth straight tunnels.

I'd agree on that, but I think the factory ones suck.
So what's the verdict? I also have a 84 with a 351W, but mine is a 2wd. What header's will work without being a major PIA? Even shorties have got to be better than he restrictive stock logs that are on there.
i've heard our motors tend to like a little back pressure... i'd hit summit and get some full length headers designed to fit our trucks, i like hooker as a brand mysself...
