So I read on here the most people only plug their PSD in for a few hours before leaving. With gas engines I have just left plugged in all night without any problems. This is my first diesel and first winter. Why would you not just leave plugged in all night?
On a side note, it is interesting that when I start it, the water temp goes up then right back down once the coolant starts circulating. Never happened with my gas engines.
Some plug in all night others only do it for a few hours; however, I've never plugged mine in so I'm not much help here. I do know that all ambulances have the block heaters tied into the shore line connections. Any time they are plugged in the heaters are on.
It doesn't hurt to plug all night, It just saves on the power bill if you put it on a timer. I generally don't need to run my block heater more than 3 hours to do the job. As for the coolant level, it's just the way the thermostat works. It helps it warm up faster.

Yeah, I just changed my oil with 5/40 Rotella synthetic this morning (amazed how much quieter the engine is now). It was 15 degrees when I woke up this morning and going to be a little colder tonight. I did not know that, so the last tank I put the grey bottle of diesel kleen. The white bottle goes in next fill up.
The block heating element on the 6.0 works very well.. within 30min the block well start to feel warm to the touch.. Any longer than a couple of hours before crank time is just a waist of current=$
