motors

Can anyone tell me if the block/motor mount configuration is the same between 302 and 351 W. I have been told the heads will interchange in a previous post and have been given some dimensions of the 351 but I am wondering if manifolds will interchange between 351 W and 302, I barely got the 302 in my 52 with the motor mounts I made up and am wondering if I am going to have problems when I decide to swap out that 302 for the 351.
I am also wondering if there is any way I can tell the year of the motor, is it stamped somewhere on the block like mopars, it is in a 68 F350 right now but I know it is not original and dont even think they had this motor that early.
Is it possible to posatively identify the tranny in the 68 behind the 351, again I dont think it is stock as I can see this truck was originally column shift and now it is on the floor 4 speed with 1st gear being real granny.
I am considering finding another tranny, something preferably/possiby 5 speed so that I can have an overdrive, also something that will allow me to go 60 miles an hour without burning up the motor, right now I cant imagine being able to get that sorta speed out of the truck as it sits cause the RPMs are so high even at 45 or so in the truck it is currently in. Any suggestions on what to look for and how to identify it? All this is going in an F-7 Big truck.
Thanks

I see only a casting # so maybe someone can tell me where to find the other # mentioned, my casting # is C-90E-6015-C, what can anyone tell me about this motor, would like to specifically know the year but anything else relevant would be nice.
Real hard to read the data plate on the truck but would someone help me to decode. I cant read what these #s are trying to tell me but the #s themselves are clear enough, first line is F35ANC14732, assuming this is the Vin, what was the original motor in the truck? Next lines are 135M........F-350......2.....81.....A.....28
10000......129.......4000........24
I am thinking that maybe the tranny that is in the truck may be the stock 68 unit after all, ( just a guess really though ) I think that it is the steering column that may have been changed at one point in which is now showing me the area where that column would have either been an auto or three on the tree. What tranny would have been used in 68 for this truck, is it a heavy duty long lasting unit? Thanks

Here is a small resource for Ford engine data. There are many repositories of similar data on the web and there are some links to these on this page. This is designed more as a quick reference with the data arranged in my peculiar fashion. I am also including casting numbers and data for some engine parts that you may find useful. NOTE: Most of the info I have is only through 1974, with a few things to 78. That's it, no other years. I'm only into early stuff - not any late model items or information.

Thanks 49 Ford, that is alot of great data, I can see that it is a 69 or 70 block, I need to check the heads, can you tell me where I might find the casting # on these. Any ideas on identifying the tranny? Id like to find out what it is then get some opinions on its worthiness.

You'll find a date code on the head under the valve cover, also. But what do I know.

There are a couple of other differences between the 289/302's and the 351W's

The oil pump drive on the the 289/302 is a 1/4" drive, its 5/16" on the 351W. the distributors are the same and can be swapped back and forth but you have to replace the drive gear to match the oil pump.

The oil pans and timing covers are also different. The 289/302's have a smaller front radius on the pan where it meets the timing cover than the 351W.

Your correct, just automatics. Goggle Drivetrain.com after you open on the left side select manual tranmissions then select Ford. This will open the parts list for all transmission. scroll down and try various ones on the right for parts and at the beginning of the list you can choose drawings. drawings show cases to identify. Many choices there and will take time. Hope this helps, chuck
