Always seems like something goes wrong right before harvest!! I can hear a whinning noise coming from the clutch area. However, it makes the noise all the time regardless if the clutch is pushed in. With that being said, the last time I drove it I played with clutch pedal a little bit and got the noise to stop. Thats a good thing. I was starting to think it was a syncro or something in the transmission. So it could the TB, pilot, or maybe the release arm bushing?
So my question is... Am I safe to drive this truck for a couple more hundred miles until harvest is over or should I park it? The noise goes away once everything is warm.. or it seems like it does. As far as the sound, it's just a low whinning noise, but can easily be heard outside the truck.
Hello new Valair ceramic clutch and now on the search for a tranny jack.
My 96 has had a whine from the trans since the Luk was put in. It will go away when the clutch is barely touched. I'm figuring TB but the synchros are out of 1st and 2nd gear so I can't see pulling the trans to check/replace until I get another trans. About 3k miles of heavy hauling and snow plowing and it hasn't gotten any better or worse.
I'd say so, esp if it's slipping into and out of gear w/out grinding. Mine I have to double clutch 1st to 2nd upshift, and can't get 3rd to 2nd down shift above 15mph w/out grinding. 2nd to 1st down shift just isn't possible moving.....
I have problems getting it into first and second like you mention above as well as 5th. Has been this way for the last 40k. Doesn't seem to be getting any worse. I had the same problem with another older ford, but after the clutch job is worked fine.
if you pull loads w/ this truck i wouldn't go with the full ceramic clutch. i did and i know i'm not going to enjoy pulling with it and Dan doesn't recommend pulling with it. if you pull i would look into the kevlar/ceramic like i had before. it was a little grabby without a load, but with a load it was smooth as silk backing trailers and taking off. great clutch IMO. i like this ceramic, but i just know it's gonna suck pulling with it... LoL

Called Dan this morning and he gave me the down low on everything. We talked more about the possible noise rather than what type of clutch I was going to get. I'm pretty much set on a ceramic as I've driven and towed with a couple Cummins that have them. You have put in down on the low side when backing a trailer and its not a problem. I know that doesn't help when your starting out going down the road.
Eventually you learn how to use the clutch so it's not as jerky when starting out. I have a cushion hitch on the bumper, which hooking onto trailers is a dream. I doubt it's going to be too difficult with the ceramic. The gooseneck might be a little different though.
I believe I talked with Dan at Valair. He couldn't have been more friendly and didn't boast his product like some many other companies do. He told me how it is and I liked that.
Also told him about my bearing symptoms and he suggested it was the pilot bearing.
On the ceramic clutch... this one is only smooth if you are above 1000rpm.. in that case if your backing a trailer and sliding the clutch at or above 1000rpm your just burning the clutch up. if you look at the valair site it says that the ceramic clutches are either in or they are out. i fully agree with that statement as this is how mine is. if you take off at an idle in 2nd it acts like it wants to kill the truck if you let out normally and if you slide it out a bit then it's jerky as hell. like i said. above 1000rpm is smooth. my brothers truck sucked to pull with when he had his full ceramic. it was just as jerky as mine is. if the ceramic is what you want then thats cool, i'm just saying.. i think your going to wish it was smoother like the kevlar/ceramic is
